Hi Ian,
I really shouldn't worry - Chris' 80 is a manual with a 1HD-FT so will
always be a lot more efficient than yours (I am guessing you have an
Auto).
If any of you are concerned about the consumption, the route that I
have recently taken with my 80 was:
Replacing air and fuel filters.
Checking the amount of smoke out the back - if you have poor
consumption and a lot of smoke it could be down to a lot of things, but
one thing you can do is adjust the fuelling via a screw at the back of
the pump on 1HD-T.
Check the turbo pressure to make sure it performing OK.
Check the turbo by pass actuator - for this and the above you need a
pressure gauge capable of going up to 10-15psi
Check the timing - fiddly to check, need a special service tool, seldom
needs adjusting, although was out on mine.
Get the injectors checked - if you can take them out yourself many
places will check them for free or for a small fee.
Get the pump checked - a pain to get out and expensive to check - once
out might as well get is serviced - I have read some stories of new low
sulphur diesel affecting the old rubber seals, so worth getting them
replaced.
I have most of the kit for the above if anyone needs any help with it.
If all is OK on the engine and you want to try to improve the
consumption further consider the following:
Consider doing the standard injector pump tweaks as detailed on the
Lcool site:
http://www.lcool.org/technical/80_series/1hdft_pump_adj.html - many
also apply to the 1HD-T
Go for a larger diameter tyre like a 285/75 - helps on motorway
mileage, although affects acceleration.
Replace the exhaust with a larger diameter one (2.5-3") -
difficult/almost impossible to get off the shelf in the UK, but some of
the custom exhaust shops can make them up.
Fit an electric fuel pump down near the fuel tank to push fuel to the
pump, overcomes problems with injector pump starvation at higher revs
common on all 80s.
Fit an intercooler - provides a more efficient burn/more power, but if
you are not heavy footed can help consumption.
Alternatively you could get a cheap runaround as a daily drive!
