54mm Wheel bearing socket

Can someone post a link to an appropriate socket as I believe it is meant to be a "thin" one if that means anything to anyone?

Or

Is there a DIY way of doing it?

Reason I ask is that on finishing the drivers side calliper rebuild today and putting the wheel back on I thought I would check for play and there is a slight top to bottom movement about 2/3mm. Thought I would see if I can nip up the nut to take up the play.

There are plenty out there. I think you have to decide whether you want a cheaper one that will do you a few uses (about £20) or one that costs way more but would be workshop quality. I went £20 version and have had no real issues. OK, it's clearly just a pressed box spanner rather than a cast / machined socket but it does the job. If I ran a workshop specialising in fixing cruisers, I would by a Veng, Facom or something posh.

So its just a std 53mm socket? It does not have to be thin walled to fit?

I was under the impression it could not be a STD socket but that does not seem to be the case. I will pick one up off the bay as I will only do the job at home and if it breaks I will get another.

Well, it's not that tight in there, but I can see how some massive industrial socket might not fit. There are quite a few that actually mention 4x4 axle nut suitability in the ad.

Looks very much like the one I have. Does the job under normal conditions.
When I got my "new" 2004, the left hub was not happy, and the sprocket washer was smeared. The pressed box spanner was to soft, but a chisel and BFH did the job. Had to hammer the 54 socket back to shape and it still works for it's intended use.
