Accident report

is it possible to put a claim in for just the wall? they might treat the car and wall as a single claim in which case i would start taking bits off the car

It will probably be cheaper if you get a builder you pick to fix the wall, once a builder hears that its an insurance job, the price will go up.

I've contacted the Ins Co, and they say the two repair costs are not combined :D
Chas

The cost of the wall repair won't affect the write off or not decision on the 80. Until recently I would have expected them to repair that damage but Dick had what looked like a minor bump in a mint 94 with a lot less damage and they wrote it off. It doesn't help that they seem to have a low book value.

Were you on the way home from the pub? :o

Good job there was no one standing in front of the wall, I don't think they would have come off as well as your LC.

As far as the insurance goes, it will be written off.

If I was in your situation make sure you keep hold of the truck and DO NOT accept their first offer. Once paid out, fix her up your self and spend the excess cash on some more toys.... and maybe some driving lessons

Wow, Chas    not good - bad luck with that!

Sadly, I am also of the view that your insurers may want to pull the plug on you and write your 80 off  At the very least, I would second the opinions here and start whipping off everything you can, just in case. Refitting your sliders and electronic goodies inside will be pretty simple but if the 80 gets written off and carted away, you can be sure that your insurers aren't going to reimburse for the value of those items, even on a secondhand basis.

Out of interest, where did this happen?

Cheers,

I would have thought you could report the accident to your insurers and let them settle the wall bit, and tell them that you don't want to make a claim for the truck.

When I had an accident with my truck (1 week after I got it - some boy racer wrote his escort off on it and then a house, and totally his fault) I reported the accident to the insurers just in case the other party tried to screw me over, but told them there was no damage to my truck. (There was 1 tiny dent and a slightly bent bumper bracket, but I figured they might even try to write that off!)

If your truck is in your possession there really is no need. The insurance company will have no interest in your vehicle and will make you an offer based on its pre accident value minus salvage value. For example if your truck was worth £4,000 pre accident and has a salvage value of £1,000, they will offer £3,000 if you tell them you want to keep the car. I believe the only exception to the above is if the car is deemed to be classed as a 'category A' write off.... yours is far from that ;)

If Chas is going to claim for the wall then he would be a fool not to claim for his truck too

It will have very little (if any) effect on his renewal premium if he chooses not to.

Well that depends if he ever wants to drive his truck again - if it's a cat a or cat b I don't believe he can. I don't have enough experience to know if we're looking at a b or c here.

Hi'yall
In the end I cancelled my insurance claim, when I found ma beast was likely to be scrapped, so I'd advise you NOT to go there Chas, they'll have it written off, for sure.
Makes a complete mockery of car insurance I know.
Glad you're okay Chas, I was worried about you when I first saw what had happened
Cheers

 Just seen this, and I can't decide whether I'm sad, worried, or impressed :!: :?:

Hi y'all
As far as the Cat A,B, C or D goes - A and B are automatic write offs, C and D not; insider info from 'those that know'
name no names though; no chance of Chas being able to 'buy it back from the insurers and drive it away if its deemed A or B; the insurers will send an engineer out and conclude its a write off; believe me when I say this; I've been there (three times; 1 with the Honda, and 2 with my LC; one was the recent steering column damage (19 April) and the other a fire under the bonnet back in November 2003).

Best you can hope for Chas is to get it fixed independently, as you've now decided to do, and this way it won't even get mentioned on your next insurance policy - years back I owned a Honda Sports Car and it would have been a complete 'Write off' if I'd gotten the insurance peeps involved; the dirty deed was done in garage forecourt here in Bristol (as did Chas the other day, 'cept in his case it was a different Bristol garage) all in all it cost me £8k; for repair of their garage forecourt display/window/etc and my car.

Cheers

Welcome to the club

Hi'yall
I was not going to name names but, it is in all our best interests for me to name the name; since it seems a few of us have had problems over the years with our Beasts' insurance claims - I used to work for VOSA engineers, tutors and VOSA-affiliated garages and have kept in close touch with them (its important that I do...); these are my 'insider informants'. VOSA are not everyone's cups of tea but they've provided me with a number of insights over the years.
It did make me laugh when I was informed that, actually, the insurance companies are more than happy to write off vehicles... in preference to other things. Then I sat back and thought, "sugar! that was a bit of a shock!" when it nearly happened to me a third time...So hence my earlier comment that this makes the mockery of all our Beast insurances.
This is the tragedy of the situation.
So y'all, be warned.
Cheers
Renate

Unfortunately insurance is about money and they will always take the cheapest option for them... period. I have less faith in insurance companies than I do in just about anything else

Hi, only just now stumbled across this post .....sorry about your LC. :(

However, I'm amazed at the (relatively) little damage to a LC compared with the wall. I think that bumper probably withstood a lot of the impact. No crumple zone there I think!

Hope it all gets sorted to your satisfaction, whichever route you decide to take.

It will be written off, if it is a cat A or B you will not have the chance to buy back. If it is a C or D then it will depend on the insurance company, some do not let you buy back for any reason. Just DO NOT let it go anywhere before the claim is settled.

That will depend on Julians estimate of cost of repairs surely, he's doing two for the Ins Co, one using Toyo parts and one using Steff's, he has assured me it won't be going anywhere.
Chas

What you have to work out is the repair cost and the LC value. If the repair cost is 55% of the value then it will be a write off. To me if done in a body shop there would be over £5k of damage. Jig time is a lot of money, just to check if the chassis is bent. Most insurance companies will not let 2nd parts be used, this is down to then having to warranty the work done.

But you need to work it like this to stop it being written off. Insurance is there to leave you the same after the claim as you were before. So just ask them to find a LC in the same condition with all the same mods instead of sending you the money. They soon change their minds!!

Paul
