[ADMIN] Future of ELCO - Please read!!

Hi All,
Thanks for all the responses on and off list so far.
It looks like a merger will result in the loss of the ELCO 'brand' and
also with so many people wanting to stay with a mailing list my gut
reaction now is to step back from a merger.
I'm going to revist the software options for running a combined mailing
list/forum - this would be the best option for keeping ELCO alive and
keep everyone happy.
If any of you have some spare googling time to help find a suitable
platform, please let me know what you find. Lyris used to have a
suitable product years ago and it looks like there are a few others out
there.
If all else fails we could move over to something like Google Groups -
there is an archive up there already, but that doesn't provide the full
forum functionality.
Oh Jon, and if we went for forums I would be keen to insist on people
using real names - using these on a forum is not going to lead to
identity theft :-)

What about a forum software that uses a web feed to give an
abreviated summary of the posts to mailboxes? That way people get
notification and can choose whether to open the full message.

Simple machines is a free forum software that gives email
notification of new messages. if all of the technical comments were in
one section then folks would get an idea of when to look.

I have had a quote for one product, but it is expensive so am going to
try to find some more alternatives.

how would you enforce this? Identity check before being allowed to
subscribe?
What happens when two or more people with the same name (it does
happen) want to join?
I would have offered to help run this or A N Other list if time is
the issue but now that I've rejoined the ranks of the unwashed PAYE
gang I wouldn't have the time..

Better have my say.
Have no problem with Forums, the only thing I will say is:
I will have to send my posts to the specific 70 series section of the forum,
this will get less views as most people will probably want to read 80 series
and above.
As for those 40 series owners, you are on your own, although I want one when
I get enough space on the drive ;)
Seriously though I feel you will lose the close knit community you have
here, and I like reading the elco posts and look forward the a message that
says 'Salisbury Plains Day Out' or 'Camping weekend' and enjoy trying to
help Land Cruiser folk out, I would still do this in the forum...but would
everyone be so keen? I like mailing lists as I have used computers when they
came with green screens the size of mobile phones.
I am surprised there is not a solution available already for free that
automatically files it in the forums, the only question is I suppose is how
you identify the email when posting a new message as it wont know if belongs
to 70 series forum for example.
I will try and find something and see if its done already.

Don't worry I'm still looking for that BIG Break - my 2 dirhams worth; I'm
easy either way although I do find it a bind to log in to forums and do
still like people sending me more 'personalised' emails... I suppose we
could have both...

Wont a PHP BB software with RSS feed offer a daily digest function for those
who don't wish to log on to the forum to read responses ?
LCOOL has moved to this format.

Addressing the identity element - I'm not really concerned about ID
theft just the practical aspects of a) how do you know what someone's
real name is and b) what happens when a second person comes along with
the same name?

Just my opinion on this -
I'm not too bothered wether its a mailing list or a forum.
The mailing list is good if you know what the original thread was, but
if you're not sure how it all started then it won't make much sense.
The forums usually have a title and this makes it easy enough to trawl
through and look for what you want.
I've wanted to go to on some of the days and weekends away with ELCO
since i joined but work has conspired against it.
I hope that whatever happens with the future of these clubs is that
someone will continue to organise social events where we can all get a
chance of putting faces to names and swap ideas.

Hmm, seems you need another opinion on all this...;-)
I rarely post to the list but I do read everything that appears with great
interest. I am a member of several lists and forums covering a variety of
interests and I eventually find I am concentrating only on those which send
direct email. Obviously this arrangement suits me best but I wouldn't get
too excited if things did have to change. The biggest difference would be
having to go and log-on to the forum to get the news rather than just
keeping an eye on the email as it arrives. Looks like laziness really
doesn't it...
Surely the issue of anonymity is easily solved. The only person who needs
the true details is the forum operator/owner etc. Without a convincing name
and address etc any attempt to join could be refused. Seems simple - or have
I missed something?
Julian, you mention some software which might fit the bill but could be
expensive. Well I would be perfectly willing to chip in a few quid towards
the cost. After all, we get a hell of a lot for nothing right now and at the
same time someone else is doing all the work! Everyone on the list is
getting plenty of good advice on all aspects of Landcruiser ownership for
nothing! Whether its how to do the maintenance, where to buy the parts,
preparation for events, what tyres are best for various conditions etc etc.
A lot of this is 'professional quality' advice and it costs us nowt! Surely
if a small contribution is required it must be worthwhile.
Comments anyone?

I for one definitely prefer the Forum idea.
I have the list set as a daily digest, as having multiple e-mails per day is a pain, especially if I am receiving mail while roaming on the mobile phone.
I never even read the digest now....well not more than a cursory glance through the first few messages before I just delete it.
There are so many people that are still incapable of setting their e-mail client to send as PLAIN TEXT that it becomes such a pain to read.Having to trawl through all the crap inserted when people still send as HTML or Rich text. All the stuff you see in posts such as:

The Lotus 340R Group are on Yahoo & that works quite well with an online
forum or a mailing list.
I personally prefer the Forum but can see the Logic of both.
It would be a shame to loose ELCO

Agree with James - "it seems a little silly to spend money to get a tiny bit
of increased functionality".
phpBB is about the most popular package on the web, probably because it is
free. It has most of the features you would want in a forum and additional
modules are available such as daily digest.
The mailing list functionality that many people want is available through a
module called Mail2Forum. The blurb says" Posts to the forum are emailed to
the list, emails to the list are posted to the forum." However there is a
problem in that a stable version of the plugin will only work with
phpBB Version
2. phpBB Version 3 has been out for some time now and a stable release of
Mail2Forum for Version 3 seems some way off yet. If anybody is clued up on

VBulletin is probably better than phpBB but is a commercial package and as
such costs money. As far as I am aware there is no such mailing list
functionality, although I understand that a digest module is available. The

Drupal is an amazing open source platform that offer loads more
functionality than phpBB or VBullitin will ever do. Multiuser blogs, image
galleries, event management and registration, wikis, ratings/reviews, news
aggregators, classifieds etc etc. Despite its sophistication Drupal can be
set up as a basic forum and the Listhandler module allows you to connect
mailing lists to forums and vice versa.

My personal experience with online groups has been much better with Yahoo
than Google. With both of these however, you are stuck in a walled garden
with little by way of traffic from the outside world.
For a quick and easy setup go with phpBB and for a more ambitious project go
