[ADMIN] List prefixes

Following on from the other messages, here is a list of proposed
prefixes:
[ADMIN] - announcements from me - V. Important!!
[CHAT] - General chat
[TECH] - Technical chat
[J120] - 120 series specific
[J100] - 100 series specific
[J90] - 90 series specific
[J80] - 80 series specific
[J70] - 70 series specific
[J60] - 60 series specific
[J50] - 50 series specific
[J40] - 40 series specific
When posting a new message/thread, prefix the subject (you must provide
one) with one of the above - subsequent replies should automatically
pick them up.
You *MUST* use the square brackets, although you don't necessarily have
to use capitals - lower case may be better.
Classifying where to post your messages is going to be tricky, but
hopefully in time we will all get the hang of it. Looking back at past
messages I would be inclined to use the following:
Seat Covers - whilst posted by an 80 series user, could apply to all so
put in [CHAT].
Tow Ropes - definitely [CHAT], although some might argue [TECH].
Renates' tyre woes - [TECH] - yes it does relate to an 80, but again
general info applies to all models.
Gaskets - specific question about 80 series rocker cover - [J80]
Simmering the turbo - official times - initially about 80, but
applicable to any turbo diesel - [TECH]
Doing 60 mph in gear 3... - 80 specific - [J80]
LED Lights - these will fit most LCs so probably - [CHAT]
Happy Posting!

Very tidy, Julian. Let's hope it becomes a second nature for all of
us. When this list graduates to a forum format this issue can be dealt
with more efficiently. Let's also hope indcision where to post won't
prevent us from posting at all.
May I also suggest a few more categories:
[RANT] - chat for those having a bad day or being over 50
[DUMB] - queries that have been already answered a hundred times over
(like Check Engine Light) but what the heck!
[RENATE] - landcruiser ownership with an emotive angle
Any more categories you can think of?

Don't worry - he's not really being cruel [roman] but I have to say -
perhaps "emotive" is too shallow a word...
Gee ! and a whole section just for me.....

Hi Ian,
I would tend to agree, however we do need to provide some arrangement
for the people with the rarer models without leaving them totally out
in the cold.

[TECH] [ INTERCOOLERS] [80 SPECIFIC]

Hi Guys
Firstly thanks Julian for the disks I will try them out soon, that should be
fun when I start looking at all the little parts that keep my Cruiser going.
Any one know about the brakes on the 80, I have read that the 100 series
pads will fit into the calipers of the 80. In doing so because they are
bigger than the 80s pads they will provide a little extra stopping power is
this true because I think I will soon need a brake pad change.
What are the pros and cons of the intercoolers for the 80, are they worth
the money, fot my cruiser its about ?800 plus the shipping as usual because
I havent found any one here that does them, plus getting Toyota to fit it if
they can. Does it help with cooling the engine better, does it give more
miles, etc etc.
I got my rocker gasket fixed yesterday after waiting for a slot in the
Toyota garage because January is very busy with people buying new cars.
Anyway The gasket cost me 12.70euro which was great, then I got the
handbrake adjusted for the test coming up very soon, because with it being
Auto I never use the handbrake ever and it tends to well not work to well.
The whole thing cost me 125euro.
Thanks

[TECH] [ GEAR BOX SEALS]

Hi Julian
Just to follow up on the gear box item, I had an idea that the seals may be
compremised if I change over to synthetic ATF. If this was the case how many
seals are there, what ones one most likely to go, and what would the cost
factor be roughly. Again I am always looking for ways to make the cruiser
better but it always seems to be a trade of of some sort. Replace the oil to
get a better one which is better for the cruiser, BUT then way up the extra
cost of the oil V the benifits V the extra cost of seals and labour. Its
like when you buy some thing to increase the mileage or prolong the pump
life you have to way up the cost aginst the benifits of saving money in the
long run and thats only maybe.
Do you know any thing about the spiralmax, cyclone etc these devices that
you put in the air intake pipe to increase mileage, your comments please
I know more questions if you ever see me you canslap me one and ill buy you
a drink hows that.

[GARGO BARRIER]

Hi Guys
Just a little up date on my search for a good cargo barrier that would not
need a mortgage on it. I went to a couple of engineerring shops and will be
getting a barrier made on Friday. I am getting two plates made to fit the
holes in the wheel arches to secure the third seat, then he will bolt a
hollow bar to these plates and then run it around behind the rear seat. The
second bar will go where the holes are for the handgrips on either side of
the roof. Of course I will take these hand grips down first which will
reveal the two holes used to secure them. He will then run a bar around the
top of the rear seat. He is also putting two bars from the roof to the base.
I can then attach a dog guard to this (which I already have) and have full
access from both the rear door and behind the rear seat. The cost of getting
this done is 150 euro which I think is great compared to what I have been
quoted for cargo barriers. I think the best had to be milfords in AUS, the
barrier was 365 dollars and the freight was 568 dollars to Dublin total over
800 dollars WOW. Its an idea for others to follow if they wish.

Hi Guys
I waslooking at a cig lighter splitter, so I could run a few things off
this. I was wondering does nay one know the story on these.
How much power does the cig lighter give out and is it really possible to
use a few things from the cig lighter. Is the fuse strong enough or can it
be replaced with a stronger one. Anyway as usual your thoughts on this
thanks

It's probably only rated at 10 amps, so don't put too much through it. Phone chargers, lap top adaptors and things like this are all fine.
Cheers,

[learning curv] [CHAT]

Hi Guys
I thought I was on to a good thing for a while, but I should have known it
would not last me being me anad all that. I saw a set of spots on the web in
a place called BrandSport in the US at $20.95 per set reduced from $140,
nice small one with white light. So I said ill have three of them sets and
why not. One set for reversing, one set for the front of the cruiser and one
set as spare well at $20 why not. I went through the process of ordering
them and BANG it hit me. The lights were $62 and the shipping was $159 WOW,
tried for one set and shipping and it was $102
shipping. Now my bargain has become no bargain at all and its a pity because
they were really nice spots, just thought I would share this so nobody else
gets there hopes up only to be smashed back down again.
Yes there has to be a question for you all now you know me, do any of you
know where I can get me hands on some spots for the cruiser with out
shipping punishment on top.

[TECH] [reverse lights]

Hi Guys
I have bought a set of 55w spots for the cruiser, to improve the visability
when reversing. I picked them up for only 26 euro and now would like to fit
them. I was thinking about chasing the wiring to the reverse light and
connecting to it. Is there any problem with connecting two 55w spots to the
reverse wiring harness. I just thought I would check before I blow up
something.
Thanks

[TECH]

Hi Guys
I was at traffic lights yesterday and while there I noticed that the road
was being dug up. There was two JCBs there with their special lights on so
the workers could see what they were doing. My question is this if it is bad
to let diesels run at idel for too long why is it that the like of JCBs and
trucks can leave their engines on to power lights etc for hours on end on a
regular basis. Do they not suffer the same soot build up as our cruisers do.
Thanks

[lights] [bulbs]

Hi Guys
I have gone mad this week and spent money I hope well spent on up grading my
lights on the front of the cruiser. I have sent off for two sets of H4 and
H1 Xenon gas bulbs. They were a little dearer than the ordinary bulbs but
they should give a 60% better light than at the moment and the light should
be whiter and brighter and have a longer field of light. I was thinking of
buying a set of spots but by the time I bought a good set then had
brackets made to hold them , it was cheaper to buy the bulbs and a spare set
aswell. When I spent over ?15 on the bulbs ,which I did I will receive a
free set of up grades for the side lights, which I thought was a good deal.
Also there is no price difference for shipping to me from the UK. I will let
you guys know if they are any good if anyone is interested at all.

[out of depth]

Hi Guys
Yesterday was spent trying to help a neighbour and his car. I just thought
that it was funny to see me trying to help another guy with a car, this
would not have happened a while ago, maybe a little confidence is coming my
way I did say a little. The car is a 1994 sunny and was ok the night before
but would not start yesterday morning at all.
We checked all the usual suspects and gave up after finding nothing obvious.
Talked to a nissan dealer who said that the sunnys have a problem with the
fuel pump going after some years. We checked this and could not hear the
pump working so we got one from a scrap yard and the neighbour fitted it. I
used the cruiser to jump start it but no joy. We checked the pump was
working which it is and spent hours trying to get it going again, but could
not. It would run for a few seconds than stop, go again then stop, this went
on for a good while then we gave up, It still wont run today.
While Trying to help him I was amazed at the lack of care the car gets
compared to us cruiser heads who love our cruisers to bits. The engine bay
was filty, the engine oil was pure black , he did say it was over due for a
service by about 3000 miles, geeze if I did that to my cruiser it would just
die.He had the car 5 years and had never looked at the fuel filter never
mind change it. I think its nice to be fussy about our cruisers when you see
the other driver who will drive his car untill it stops. I would have been
chuffed if we had solved the problem but I was out of ideas and gave up.
