Yes mate, we use both sorts as range vehicles and the 3.0 litre is very noticeably more powerful. The 2.5 litre is not underpowered having said that but i would opt for the 3.0 litre.
I've got a 3ltr, it's fairly quiet and smooth and has a flat(ish) power curve. The 2.5 is a good motor but a wee bit noiser and has a narrower power band so you have to use the gearbox a lot more.
This has just been covered in the last few weeks on http://www.hpoc.co.uk. The general consensus was that there was very little difference between the 3.0 and 2.5 engines. The 2.5 can be chipped up to over 200bhp (Lindop chips seemed favorite) and still prove to be reliable. The main selling point is the 3.0 is fitted to the invincible so you get all the whistles and bells to boot. Although you no longer get an LSD on the invincible as it interferes with the traction control. The HL3 seemed to be overall favorite with the 2.5. Earlier 3.0 d4d engines did suffer from injector rattle and consequently got recalled if the problem arose to have new injectors fitted and an ecu remap. The 2.5 also worked out to be slightly cheaper to run overall but that all depends on the weight of your right foot.
