anyone tryed speedi sleeve?

I tried one years ago didn't work. In the end I paid stupid money to buy a front axle because I couldn't stop the axle leaking.
Turned out to be the fact I replaced inner axle oil seal three times after buying them from a certain company that didn't do the job.

I'll have a look to see what half shafts I've got if you want. Unless your wanting a cheaper option.

I'm sure Chris has used them with no issues

Speedi sleeves are generally very good. I've used them on electric motor shafts without issue. Not cheap as far as I recall but v good.

Timely post as I have a shaft seal leaking on my Smart. :-)

Ay up. Just came across them the other day and wondered if anyone had used them. Ive read if you dont lose locktite they can "leak"

I've used them mainly on HGV stuff with good success. The only time they didn't work for me was on my Nissan Patrol front half shafts when they wouldn't fit in with new OEM seals.
Like Karl says, Chris has used them, I think the only thing to watch is the exact location when fitted to allow for longitudinal movement of the shaft not passing the seal ( if that makes sense)

That makes sense andy. There about £20 each. Bargain. A new shaft is about £150.

Yes, used them several times very successfully. I think I have posted it somewhere. I build the shaft up first with something like liquid metal. Any good filler would probably work. Then I take that back down level. I put the sleeve on then over the filler. If you don't, the sleeve will actually mould to the worn shaft. OK so it's not as bad, but you still end up with a groove of some sort. So fill first, sand back then sleeve. I'm lick to have the lathe of course, so I shove it in there which makes the whole thing very easy. £17 a sleeve

Oh yes, I fortunately read that before rebuilding my front axle. Thanks Karl. However I have used Speedi sleeves in my day job and they are an excellent solution to a seal groove.

The Smart too has genuine seals where the drive shafts enter and these are almost new (changed them myself) it's just the driveshafts were bought from Euro Car Parts by the PE and I don't think they are the genuine article.

Vauxhall 16v oil pump drives were notorious for leaks, I use them on those way back and have never had a problem. Let us know how you get on CG, I am pulling my front shafts soon to sort a leaky swivel, may need one or two for myself, Although I do have a couple of the Marlin Crawler seals that arrived today.

regards

Dave

Dave,

Will be interested to hear how you get on with the Marlin seals.
Last time I did a axle rebuild I threw a couple in to see if they helped with the grooves.

Ended up going back in and pulling the trigger on some new half shafts and OEM seals to properly fix leaky issues. Could well have been me stuffing up installing the Marlin seals of course...

Anyhow, Chris's write up on speedi sleeves:

cheers
dave.

it wont be for a while dave, got a lot on at the mo, but next time I'm in there it will be part of the job.

t'other dave. thanks for the link. I was going to go down the new half shaft route before I saw these. sorted the leak I take it?

I once ordered a set of the marlin seals. wrong ones came so I lost all interest in them...

I am sure I had some other pics CG but can't find them. As I said, you really do need to fill the wear groove with filler for the best result. I put it in the chuck and turned it by hand to lay the filler in then used very fine grit paper to smooth it back to level.

They come in different lengths so the seal does not drop off the end in some cases.

Not seen those Frank and I have the catalogue. Are they a special?

They used to do them years ago but perhaps don't any more. When I first used them they had only just set up in business if I remember correctly. Also IIRC their HQ and supply was in Bearwood Birmingham. Perhaps they were taken over. No mention of SKF when I used them.

It's a shame that they don't seem to Frank as the ones for the front drive shafts are a close call. Any shorter, they'd be too short let's put it that way. I guess you could put two on.

Could you knock them on just not quite all the way home then peel the shoulder off or am I muddled up?
