Hi team I called Toyota this morning to book my 90d4d in for atf change I did this two years ago so according to the manual it's due. Toyota technician informed me not to bother as they are only changing atf oil when problems occur. I know for sure that there are members on this fourum that know better that toyota guys so what do you guys reckon? Should I take their advice or not?
Thanks in advance

"Only change ATF when problems occur?"

WTF!? Surely it's too late by then. I honestly wouldn't trust a dealer with an older Landcruiser. Try and find a specialist or try DIY - there is a lot of knowledge, help and guidance available on this forum.

I would change the ATF yourself - it's quite easy and I have done it/do it (if I can do it, then I'm sure 99.9% of the general population can!)

You only end up changing a few litres of ATF and not the whole capacity (unless you drop the gearbox sump), so well worth doing every couple of years.

Also think about replacing your radiator, if it's the original, as the ATF cooler within the rad is a known weak point and will has the potential to fubar your gearbox if a leak is left unchecked. Check your coolant and ATF regularly to make sure they are not getting contaminated by each other.

The radiator was done already replaced by previous owner along with a new gear box due to atf and coolant contamination Its four years since so I may change the rad in summer . If the previous owner was a member of this fourum he would saved £££££. As for the Atf I called Toyota back and insisted they changed it so they booked it in for next week

Thanks for the advice

Do you have a dip stick on your d4d 90 series Gearbox?

if you do its so easy to change, i would include it in your service regime. i bought a load of atf fluid when i had my colorado and used to change it quite regular. get you self a garden sprayer and adapt it so that you can put the new oil in easy.

I probably change mine every 50,000 miles or so with Synthetic stuff and it comes out looking only a little tarnished after that kinda millage. But if you're towing it's a good idea to do it more frequently.
