Auto gear change

Hi, I've got a 96 Prado which I have had for about 9 years. A couple of years ago the auto box started playing up - it wouldn't change up and when you made it do so by lifting off it wouldn't go into top. This was intermittent. At first you could drive 50 miles and it would be okay. One day fine, the next a problem. This was diagnosed as the ECU so I bought a new one and had various other sensors changed and new earths fitted. No change.

Could it, I asked the gearbox man, be something to do with the transfer box. No way. Humour me, I said. He tried it with the diff locked and then with the box in low. Back in drive the problem had disappeared. Apparently some muck can mask one of the sensors and send the wrong signal to the ECU. If you use your transfer box often it won't happen, but I rarely need to, my main use is for towing.

So I've spent the best part of a grand for nothing. I hope this helps anyone else out there who has a similar problem, and meanwhile I'll put the ECU on ebay.

Martin
