Banging from the back end - continued!

So, the 80 Series started developing a bang from the back end when going over potholes. I got underneath with a pry bar and everything looked pretty tight except for the ARB bushes which were fooked, so I changed those out, pretty confident that I'd sorted it. Nope, no difference at all - still banging over potholes.

I had another look underneath - again, nothing obvious. I'm hoping to grab some time on a lift shortly to give everything a better inspection, but in the meantime any thoughts? I'm really hoping its not body mounts...

Put your foot on exhaust a rattle it trying to make it bang against something .

Cheers Shayne - pretty sure it's not the exhaust, sounds like suspension - but certainly worth a check, as these things can be a PITA to track down as you'll appreciate!

I think we've been down this rabbit hole before.
I had the same problem with an 80 a couple or 3 years ago. All rear suspension tight and in order but the knocking persisted.
I got my mate Al to drive while I got in the rear boot space and then I could precisely locate the source of the noise, the o/s rear body mounting.
Took a s/h one off a spares 80 in decent condition, bit of a faff having to loosen all the body mounts to get it out of one and fit it to another but it cured it the truck was transformed into something not annoying.
This might or might not be your problem but it might be a source of elimination.

Cheers Andy, I did vaguely recall you mentioning this at one time. Bit worried about what will be seized/rusted/fall off if I have to lift the body LOL!!! Just a thought... I can't find anything else loose whilst on the drive - guess it would be worth jacking her up on the chassis rails and let the back axle hang, that might throw up any suspension bush issues?!?

Nope, spare wheel carrier is removed completely.

Fuel tank strap rubber may have fallen out causing tank to bang around?

When i saw this topic - i thought it must be in the wrong forum altogether... ;-P

Might be worth checking the exhaust where it crosses over the chassis. On mine i noticed there was nearly bugger all gap and managed to nudge the tailpipe into a low wooden post, which made it actually touch the chassis.... had to use my superhuman strength to pull it back out again and the clonking went away...

Bat21 - nope. TBH I haven't look at this again, got sidetracked with other projects - need to get into it.... Thanks guys.

Sooo... managed to get the old girl up on a ramp today - wiggled everything with a pry bar and discovered that the rear near side body mount was toast. Packed it with lumps of rubber belt for now as a temporary measure (and to confirm that was the source of the bang). Drive home was bang-free, so I think that solves the mystery... so essentially the same situation Andy described above.

Now I need to decide what to do about a permanent fix... suggestions welcome!

Surely just about any bush could be cut down to size/height to give you a rubber doughnut .

Probably Shane - I've not even attempted to undo the bolt yet, I doubt it's been undone since the car was built! Expecting things to shear off and swearing to commence, so ideally I want to get a replacement bush(es?) lined up before I start.

I reckon I've got a good S/H one I'll post you for £15 if you want to go down that way.
As I remember I undid both rear long bolts and all the ones down the side of the one I changed, jacked the body up with a scissor jack between the chassis and the body at the back and removed one and replaced it with a better one. Wasn't a five minute job but not bad. As I remember it was done within an hour.

@AndycruiserguyLomas - quick (and possibly stupid) question - is the big bolt through the back mounts fully captive, or can you knock the long bolt out? Mine looks rusty as hell and I'm thinking it'll likely shear as soon as I attack it... Thanks again for the help, appreciated.
