Bloody cars

I was on the turn of horses and carts and the expansion of trucking. At the college I went to,for a period of time I was in charge of two Clydesdales and their harness and carts harrows etc.Loved it.

When I was a kid in the late 50's maybe early 60's, us kids used to help out on my uncle's dairy farm on the Isle of Wight during our summer holidays.

He had a big Massey Fergusen tractor and a small grey one that he let me drive as an 8 year old. He also had horses if more than 2 carts had to be used at the same time. We would haymaker mostly, cutting, turning, baling and collecting the bales back to the haybarn in the yard.

The games I had with that bloody horse will never be forgotten. He didn't like me and he didn't hide the fact! I swear he deliberately put a full 12 bale high cart into a ditch one time, uncle Arthur wasn't pleased, we had to unload it by hand to another cart to get the bugger out of the ditch.

Fond memories of all that, and camping with my brother and sister for six weeks in one of his meadows... something my daughter will never experience... :icon-biggrin:

Electric cars, like anything else, can be recycled but battery recycling is specialised and expensive. Then there's all the electronic components that can't (or shouldn't) be simply thrown into the crusher.
As for power generation, IMO the only answer to our future power needs is nuclear and when power from nuclear fusion is eventually perfected it'll be safer. The big problem with all the other options like wind, wave, growing fuel crops to burn in place of fossil fuels etc is they can't be done on a large enough scale. The worlds population is exploding with the demand for reliable power growing faster than our future ability to produce it.

Well I guess there may not be many more posts on here, only got a few pics. Had to use my work tablet for a lot as I was short of phone memory!!

Now sat in that little swimming pool should be a control unit, shouldn't be water cooled either lol.
Had a leak through a wiring grommet

This 'beautiful' m5 broke down, simply ran out of fuel as gauge was wrong.

Have various others but not on my phone.

Well as said in another thread I've got a new job!
After nearly 12 years with the company and being there longer then other workshop staff I'm saying bye.
It hasn't been received well but there's been issues going unresolved for too long. I actually like what I do and will be sad to leave. The head of business wants a meeting next week with me, they don't want me to leave and that's been made clear.

Anyway the new job... a brand new dealer, sparkling new 8 bay workshop plus mot bays! There will be an aftersales manager who I report to but workshop is down to me.
It will only be half staffed to start with while things get off the ground, I'll still end up getting my hands dirty if a fault demands it, it's one of the reasons I was chosen for the role.

Well done Gary, it's the way to go. You've earned this. Just make sure they pay you well because you'll do a good job regardless.

Cheers lads. It's a big move as been there for a few years. I have a feeling management will try make me an offer to stay tbh. I had a text this morning asking me to think about staying. Lads in workshop keep asking me for a job lol.

@clivehorridge the pay is good, I'm actually taking a pay cut initially but when things get going it'll increase. It's not all about money after all and I don't do badly anyway.

Well done on the job front Gary, as you say money's not everything. Some Chinese philosopher once said "Pick a job you love and you'll never have to work another day"

"Tide is the most powerful and constant force on earth"
I always thought it was love :romance-lovegoddes:

Love is more powerful than money mate but neither can turn back the tide .

Keep an open mind Gary as a teen with no qualifications at all i followed my heart from one job to the next until i could pretty much choose where i worked , and i eventually realized if everyone keeps asking me to return i should at least pretend money mattered .

Well done Gary, hope the new role works out great for you.

Congrats on the new job! Keep the thread going though - I've enjoyed it.

Just a quick one, spent many hours chasing a very intermittent click/creak when changing direction of drive, noise could be heard from the prop shaft but turned out to be the splined flange on an outer cv joint! Strip clean and lube and all sorted, been to another dealer and been in with us before too.

Had 2 imported cars from south Africa that needed mpg speedometers fitting, new bit of software from technical dept and 2 new clusters. Nope life isn't that kind!!!
One went without a hitch, the other well has been nothing but grief!
Wouldn't code or accept the new cluster, multiple phone calls, e mails etc with technical and some digging it can't be done. Turns out the car is a funny spec (Malaysia) and isn't hardwired for an emissions fault lamp
Only compatible cluster has other spec that the car doesn't have, no one can confirm if this will cause further issues and it's £500 to order and try!
5 weeks to go

Today has been an oily day,
Recovery as lost its oil, yep the sump isn't really good at holding oil with the front propshaft having a look inside

Had few meetings and I've been told there's always a job for me. Been offers on the table but can't offer the position I'm moving for.

You'll be fine Gary, once you've settled into your new position.

Remember, you've worked your way up through the ranks, you're not a green-horn fresh out of management school.

You have your trade behind you every step of the way from now on, you'll not be out of work, all the recent offers evidence that!

Enjoy your new position and try not to forget the difficulties those on the shop-floor have to endure. They will respect you for your experience.
