hi all,

what engine would and what engine could go into a colorado ?

i have the lkz te 3L engine at the moment, and crave some more power and mpg given the truck is heavier and running 33's, yes i know none of these are good for performance or mpg.

seeing the power and mpg figures for the newer 3 litre toyota diesel engines,
i was woundering if they would mate up to the colorado gearbox ?

also what other engines could work for a upgrade ?

cheers roy

Hi Roy

I have the same engine in a Prado, which has an intercooler, that def gives the engine a bit more go.

The later engine introduced inbthe early 2000s is a better engine, more power, mpg etc, but you may be better buying one and selling your collie, conversions to a different engine always seem to be more grief in the long run!

Cheers

Pete

Easier to get a newer more powerfull model

the hilux surf guys have been putting supra v8's in there surfs

do not want a newer one, like my old modded truck.

If you crave power then a V8 would be your only man, maybe a small block chevy or similar.
no point putting in something only slightly warmer than the standard lump.

Lexus V8 I have seen also out of an LS400, cars are cheap enough aswell

you might be lucky and get a written off colorado with the newer d4d running gear and do a complete swap out but its going to be very expensive and labour intensive. depends on how handy you are with the spanners and how many pound notes you have burning in your pocket.

I would go with a chev 350 V8, (5.6 lt's) its very cheap for standard parts compared to other engines, is easy to modify with lots of after market parts and a very simple engine, can be carburated or fuel injected, it's got masses of torque potential and is relatively small engine.

Were I to consider removing the lump from my truck, not that thirsty would forgive I think, and replacing it with a petrol then top of my list would be a Chev 350, I first experienced one when I was a young apprentice and to this day it's still my favourite petrol V8.

What can I say, I like simple mechanics in my vehicles. :)

I had a D4D and the fuel consumption was really bad, never felt it was any more powerfull either, the RX type S i have now is a lot better.

I hate to admit it but for a long time i had a fetish for a v8 landrover and spent hours searching the interdebt for info . A chevy V8 diesel is definately the way to go , i was astonished to learn a far more powerful engine designed decades ago actually got better fuel consumption than its modern day equivelant . As an added bonus its proven to be almost indestructable , readily available and spares are cheap . Quite a number of landrover specialists in the UK actually offer this conversion on thier websites .

No idea if it will fit but how about the 5l V10 from the VW Touareg.
volkswagen-touareg-v10-tdi-08.jpgLooks Very pretty to me.
4921cc V10, 310bhp @ 3750rpm, 553lb ft @ 2000rpm

Ok, I was thinking simple!

I agree with Julian, the shortblock chevy is a great motor, I had a Chevy dayvan that was low mileage but not worth much and I did consider the engine for a transplant. Its lighter than the rover/buick v8, and my efi was 255bhp as standard, probably tuneable to about 300bhp quite simply.

Intercooler idea much simpler though.....

Cheers

To be honest you could spend some money on the original 1kzte engine and see good gains. I'll start with what I would do firstly

-Front Mounted Intercooler
-Up the Boost on the Turbo
-tweak the fuel Pump
-Better Air Filter
-Bigger Dump Pipe as well as straight through 3" Exhaust
-Methanol/Water Injection Kits
-If yours is manual and you dont care about economy then fit the mechanical 1KZT pump on it
-Lose any unnecessary weight
-Chips for the ECU
-If you have a lot of miles on your engine, then you're probably down on power - new insides - rings, valves ect
-Maybe too far, but a bigger turbo?

These engines are pretty strong ONCE they are kept at cool temperatures. Have a search on google, People do a lot with these engines, you'll be surprised
