Couple of questions

Couple of things I wouldn't mind some advice on.
1. I have an auto but I regularly use the gearbox for engine breaking
even on the road. I do it to avoid riding the brakes on steep hills. Is
there any problem with this?
2. The mods detailed on
http://www.lcool.org/technical/80_series/1hdft_pump_adj.html
Are they worth applying to the 1HDT as well?
Cheers,
Ian.
Hope everyone had a good Xmas!

Hi Ian,
I can not see any problem with using the gear box for engine braking and do
this all the time as I live in hilly windy Wales and often use the auto box
in a manual manor taking off the O/D or putting it into second or even first
when negotiating down hill sections or setting up for a bend.

Hi Ian,
I do the same thing and wouldn't have thought that it would be too much of a problem - the gearboxes are
pretty solidly built.
Some of them aren't applicable, but you can try most of them.
Rob Edwards on this list, posted the following to another list that might help:
From [Email address removed] on the 80s list:
Perhaps Rob will chip in with a bit more feedback.

Hi Stephen,
I recall some discussions on the Aussie LCool lists a few years ago
about fitting the free wheeel hubs, but can't remember what the outcome
was.
Actually I think the poverty pack version of the 80 and 105 series have
them as standard - hopefully Jon out in Bosnia will chip in about this,
I think that he has them in his truck.
I have fitted Milner's CVs to my 80 and a few others, however I am a
little concerned about John B's Milner CV snapping as a result of a
basic traffic manouver.
For general off roading in the UK and Europe I would exepect them to be
fine, but I think that if you are prepping for a major overlanding trip
I would be inclined to stick to Toyota genuine.

Ditto - Will be interesting to hear how JB gets on and if he can trace
the problem to a dodgy CV or what.

I'm thinking along those lines also.
My brother just married a receptionist from a Toyota Garage - will be
interesting to see what type of discount she can get! ;-)

Well fitting Free Wheel Hubs on a Landcruiser 80, isn't that a rather
big job? anyone? ... When having constant 4WD the Free Wheel Hubs
themselves are not enough.. don't you have to convert the transfer case ?

I am not sure you would need to alter the transfer case but I think the
issue your getting at is;
Without the centre diff lock engaged would you get any drive?
Can you run with the centre diff locked all the time without damage?

Yes, and the point that when you have your center-diff locked, you are
still driving the whole forward-drive-chain (as I see it the whole point
of the Free Wheeling hubs, is that the whole front part of the
drive-chain doesn't turn?)
But the whole idea of a 2wd 80 is a little frightening to me.. One of my
friends was driving around as a 2wd (center-diff locked, the CVs and
half-shafts had been removed). He broke hes rear-diff! (well.. he was
asking for it, doing "burnouts" and stuff)
I myself have min in the same situation with a broken CV and I limped
around on 2wd for about a week or so, I don't like it.. everything on
the 80 was made for full-time 4wd..
