Dear Santa, Could I have an hintercooler please?

Andy, looked at Matt's when I was [strike:1g86shwb]fixing[/strike:1g86shwb], [strike:1g86shwb]adjusting[/strike:1g86shwb], [strike:1g86shwb]repairing[/strike:1g86shwb], [strike:1g86shwb]improving[/strike:1g86shwb], [strike:1g86shwb]servicing[/strike:1g86shwb], admiring his. Happy with what's involved. I just need the bits.

Have a good trip to Aberdeen. Hope it goes well. Should be pretty quiet.

Back with my "laner" on the trailer. 7 hours to get there, saw absolutely nothing on the roads,50 miles or more without seeing another car, set off at 11 50, got there at 6 50, mind you it was bloody windy, 8 and a half hours to get back, 401 miles door to door!! Used 50 gal of fuel so a good bit cheaper than transport.
Thats 1200 miles Christmas eve and boxing day!

Sorry for the hijack - but are we talking £85 up to £225 for a gauge?!
That's a lot of £ for a gauge compared to - well almost anything!
Is my understanding that it's an output / display device only and based on what it says you would adjust your turbo settings?
Matt, the EGT gauge is to check whether you're over-fuelling (feeding too much fuel after tweaking the pump to take advantage of the cooler air from the I/C). Too much fuel makes the combustion temps too high and can do nasty things to the pistons and valves. An I/C on its own (i.e. no fuelling increase) actually lowers EGT so no life or death need for an EGT gauge IF that's the case, hence the general  to I/Cs because they increase the efficiency and longevity of the engine if you're not trying to get big power gains at the same time. (Apologies if I am stating the obvious)
Based on what the EGT gauge says, you would adjust the fuelling, rather than turbo boost. Obviously increasing the boost pressure without upping the fuelling in the 1st place doesn't make a lot of sense  In light of your recent engine replacement, I'm chuckling that you think a few hundred quid is expensive if it makes the difference between your engine going bang or not

To Chris, have you had a look at the Safari I/C "package" for the HD-T? A gorgeous set-up but a lot of dosh IIRC - something like £2k, could be worse now with the exchange rate changes since I last looked. I recall seeing a lot of scathing Aussie commentary on LCOOL about the crudeness of the Allisport set-up by comparison. Yes, the Allisport looks nice and shiny with the alli bits but the bends and radiuses do leave a lot to be desired in terms of smooth airflow. Have a look at the Safari kits and you'll see the difference with the pipework. The Safari option looks OEM standard - but £800 vs £2k suddenly sounds like good value if it matches the performance.

Oh my. That really is properly made. Very nice. 28% more power available. I like that. But for £2k?

It's a project on hold at the second. Winch bumper first.

Nice, that looks like the intercooler itself would be quite easy to remove for cleaning mud out as well.

At a loose end at work and pretty bored so I tracked down a few of the other intercooler options I'd previously found.

As is my way, I wasted hours of my life investigating the available options in terms of intercooling the 80. I never did decide which one I'd go for though

Another top mount option comes from these people http://www.mtqes.com.au/products.php?ac ... icle&id=17 though a better idea of the fitted product is given here http://www.amms.net.au/images/media&pre ... unnaV2.pdf

Front mounts similar to Safari (which most companies are ripping off to be fair)

And then there are the water to air chargecooler options
http://www.4wdbits.co.nz/ProductDetails ... uctID=1337
The Denco system has been fitted to 80s that participate in competition 'Dakar like' events so must be pretty good but also blooming expensive http://www.dencodiesel.com/store/comers ... ategory=63

Silly question - does the intercooler from a 100 TD not fit? Or is it not a viable option? Must be a few of them in various chop-shops?

Cheers

Interesting stuff. Now all I need is one for sale in THIS country.

Top mount seems a good option

I like the easy fitting and the fact that there isn't yet another thing in front of my rad. Not sure about cutting a scoop out of the bonnet. Having said that I would still go for a front rad. Been trawling the Bay and there are lots of tintercoolers out there, but I don't really have time to fanny about buying loads of different bends and connectors then cobbling together something that fits. Making brackets blah blah. Then ending up with a bugger's muddle. OK £800 is the thick end and I know that a homespun job will be a quarter of the price, but sometimes it's best to pick the one off the shelf.

Worth seeing what we could get I suppose. I'm not after a fire breathing monster, just a little more woof here and there.
