That was me. Mine did the same in the v. cold weather we had last January.
I downloaded the section of the FSM on the cruise control which gave lots of diagnostic information and, in my case, I think it boiled down to the current to the motor exceeding some number of amps. I cleaned out and oiled / greased everything I could find in the CC unit - not much it has to be said - and the problem went away, but whether that was due to my ministrations or to the warmer weather I don't know!
The FSM you need is RM184E, Body Electrical (BE) section, pages BE 103 to 125. You can download this from http://www.mudtoys.com/manuals/RM184E.pdf (thanks again Jon!) but be warned that it's a fair old download at 117Mbytes. Section BE 103 in the acrobat reader is page 656.
Essentially it says that if the CC fails the light on the dash will blink 5 times and the CC will shut off. You then have to leave the engine running and use a diagnostic light to read flashes from the CC unit, and troubleshoot from there. However I'd try the cleaning and oiling first.
