Do we think we should be replacing these now as a matter of course due to the age of our vehicles?
Anyone changed theres and noticed a difference?

I've not changed mine, nor even thought about it TBH.

Not being 100% clued up, are you talking about the 'rubberized' main crank pulley?

If yes, a guy in work has just had his fail on a BMW Mini and as it drives the blower, he ground to a smoker halt. It's cost him a fortune to have replaced.

Do you suspect that yours has/will fail?

I'm guessing we are talking hardening of the rubber here are we rather than likelihood of failure?
Are you also thinking to do this before they become unavailable?

I've just done mine ( post here). Mine was definitely cracking and had some "twist". Product Link from Roughtrax here.

I've just written to Roughtrax about it with some feedback - in the main I think they do good homework and supply good products but the pulley I bought off them was not a direct fit - I had to tap out the M8 holes to remove paint and also get some new bolts about 8mm shorter than the originals as the pulley casting lip was fouling the rear side.

The engine has not run yet so I cant comment on any difference.

Do they do a 24v version? At work on phone. Can't be bothered to try and search using that without my reading glasses

I cant see one listed on their website Chris - the 12v is out of stock now also.

Thanks Roger

Not sure I know how to tell if I need one
Bet they're a swine to get off

rogers engine rebuild jogged my memory on something I read a good few years ago. I googled it and re-read some horror stories.

yes that's what I mean clive.

I do have a very slight vibration at low revs. probable nothing to do with it.

next time I do the cambelt I might just change it.

theres plenty about still rich. I'm told a lot are sold to the middle east and australia. maybe the heat perishes the rubber faster?

That seems to make sense re the heat CG. I too have a vibration at low revs and the DB was mentioned here by Frank iirc.

I do not consider it a maintenance issue on the 80 (unlike many modern engines) but I do know they can fail. Failure tends to be a slow process but never seems to be noticed until it is too late. I have taken a paint brush with white paint and painted a stripe across the two pulleys on mine, when under the bonnet a quick glance tells me the two halves bonded by rubber are still in sync with each other.

I also considered that as I have removed the engine cooling fan that there may be additional heat in this area, but now into about three years with Spain's hot climate I still see no problems with heat.

FWIW, when out 4x4..ing and when leaving the car to walk an area I leave the engine running to keep the AC on, it is not uncommon for my engine to be running four hours at low revolutions including idling for extended periods, IMO heat is not an issue.

The real threat IME is when the AC compressor seizes up. A friends 80 had this happen, the initial problem was the AC belt snapped whilst he was driving, plenty of smoke but was able to continue his journey, the compressor and belt replaced some time later. It was at least a year later before he had charging problems, the alternator dropping it's output when loaded with lights, HRW etc. The alternator was replaced but no change, using the 'paint stripe' method we found the outer and inner pulleys were rotating at different speeds but only when the belts were under load, interesting there was no squealing or noise from the HB, I think the compressor seizing strains the bond between the two pulleys and starts the eventual failure.

Sorry for the long winded post but it may help someone in the future?

regards

Dave

Hmmm… interesting. My compressor seized last year…ill have to have a look at my lines. Alas my vibration started long before the seizure and the compressor clutch or belt slipped when mine seized and I hit the AC button within seconds.
