As i have been chasing the strange shimmy at various times, i thought i may have found it. Apart from a little play in the lower wishbone bush and no play anywhere else i had resigned myself to doing a hub rebuild but thought i would do a little more checking just in case.
After taking off the miles of underbody protection, there is noticable play in the front diff mounts and they will need doing, as well as a seal on the end of the diff tunnel so thought that was the problem.
While under there, whoever greased the uj's last (checked them for play too) put loads in as it has sprayed around the underside of the truck, so i whipped out the nipples for the sliding shaft as have read loads on this. Took it for a test drive and the shimmy has gone.
Now, it is possible that the pry bar i used to check everything has popped something into place or even the underbody protection caused it, but unlikley and was secured very well, but there is a definate improvement.
I will leave the nipples out for a while just to make sure.
