Kelvin MacKenzie's hijab remarks in the Sun spark 1,400 complaints, I wonder how many there were about the hijab wearer? but of course the BBC in their inimitable fashion wouldn't report that would they?

I remember the BBC had a complaint re a newsreader wearing a cross, she was told not to wear it anymore as it upset viewers!

It was Fiona Bruce, and you remember incorrectly.

That she was told not to wear a cross.
OK, my mistake, I thought she had been told not to wear it but that the BBC went back on it's decision to ban it.

Well that may have happened, but only Fiona and a few Beebers will know. It was reported that they had discussed it, but not changed their policy.

I did just read what Kelvin wrote. I like his comment that he doesn't know if they'd allow a reporter to where a hijab in France. If only there was some sort of profession where people investigated and researched those sort of things.

I just looked at the newsreader in question, She is dressed effectivley like a nun and we aren't about to start relieving nuns of their habit (unless it's on a specialist website and the nun has been a very naughty nun :))
The whole cross thing aside, this guy from the sun is a prick.
The point he is trying to make is as ridiculous as saying that it would be offensive for a male newsreader to read a story about a woman who has been raped or an adult reporting a story where a child has been molested.

I saw a news reporter doing her job, anyone who saw anything different needs to have a long hard look at themselves imho

This.

I didn't even make the connection until I saw CM's comments. What a complete and utter ****, always was and probably always will be. You only have to see his comments regarding Hillsborough to see that.

BTW - Around a 1/3 of the victims of the Nice attack were Muslims - not that should make any difference in this case anyway, they were all just "people".

I certainly do not endorse any of Kelvin MacKenzie's hijab remarks, but I do think it was tactless of the BBC to use this particular newsreader for this particular news item.
The point I was trying to make was that it was only the complaints about Kelvins remarks that were reported on.
I am sure you would probably agree there would have been some people who would have complained about a muslim reporting on an attack that had been made by a muslim. As far as I know nothing was reported about that possibility.

"I am sure you would probably agree there would have been some people who would have complained about a muslim reporting on an attack that had been made by a muslim."

That’s a bit confusing. So, should a buddhist have done it, or a hindu when reporting on Nazi Germany during WW2?

Was the double standards contradiction what you intended to point out mate ?

Not confusing at all, my point being there is always somebody who will complain about anything.

I could be wrong but I think the BBC cherry pick what to report on rather than report all instances.

Hi CHAS,

One of the many reasons I dont watch BBC news any more.

They are just so biased.

I seem to watch Sky news more than ever now, totally disregarding BBC biased shit.
Hi Chas,

64 million people forced by law to pay for something that is only watched by people in non paying locations . Its the govs propaganda channel .

Guys,
WRT to all this anti-BBC vitriol, lets just look at the facts in this case......

1. Fatima Manji appeared on Channel 4 News reporting on the Nice attack
2. Kelvin Mackenzie wrote in The Sun about the report in #1, commenting on the hijab of the reporter.
3. The article in The Sun attracted 1400 complaints to the press regulator.
4. The article/comments were also deemed "completely unacceptable" by Channel 4 News
5. Manji wrote an article in The Liverpool Echo, in response to MacKenzie's comments

IMHO the BBC simply reported on the above events, though as a broadcaster they will no doubt have a vested interest in (hopefully) maintaining the objectivity of their journalists.

In other news.........
