I passed my Chinese driving licence test.
Now before you all scoff, and suggest that it would be an easy test, let me tell you different. :eusa-naughty:

There are 1320 questions. :wtf:
At the exam center, you are selected 100 random questions by the computer.
They are in an exam hall of about 50 metes square, with I guess 100 test desk stations.

90 correct is the passmark.

Any way, first time I went on Friday, I scored just 86 correct.

This Monday morning I returned and scored 93 correct.

Needless to say, we were both mightily relieved.

It really is the most difficult test I have ever done.

When I remember the CT driving test at Green Point, many years ago, and the UK driving test.
This Chinese driving test is way, way, way, above that.

Congratulations Gra!

Do you have to do a practical test or just theory?

Thank you Ben,

If you have a full drivers licence in your recognised home country
then just the theory.

UK, USA, Aus. Canada, most EU countries, etc, are recognised countries.

I believe RSA, Botswana, Zimbabwe, etc, you need do the part 1, driving, part 2, observation, and part 3 theory.

Well done!

That does seem like a pretty comprehensive test. Does the actual driving on the roads reflect that?

So I suppose it leads to the question - why bother to make the test so hard and then not enforce any of the rules on the roads........?

Gra, was it in Chinese? Now that would be difficult.

C

Well done Graham  Were the questions multiple answer ones, did you have to select the answer on a screen or was somebody asking the questions, if so how did you overcome the language problems because I remember you saying your Chinese was not that good. A while back you made a post where you went on a moped trip did you not need a licence for the bikes?

They make the test difficult, as they just don’t want so many people on the roads.
The Chinese have lost of spare money now, and they are buying cars like there is no tomorrow.
The number of seriously expensive German cars, is testament to this wealth.
In Beijing, you can buy a car, you can get your licence, but can’t get a licence plate for your car.
They are restricted to about 20,000 a month.

Gra, was it in Chinese? Now that would be difficult.

Hi Chris, the signs are in Chinese with multiple characters on them.
Slow,,,,,,
Yield,,,,,,
Halt,,,,,,
Inspection place,,,,,,,,
To name just a few.

Well done Graham

Hi Chas, We did our trip in Vietnam.
Hanoi in the North, 2200km to Saigon in the South.
We should have had Vietnamese driving licences, but it is not enforced.
The few times we were pulled over, just before we actually stopped, and the traffic police saw we were foreigners, he just waved us back onto the road again.

Well done Graham.

As a matter of interest, what side of the road do they drive on?

Roger

Hi Roger,
They drive in the right, the left, the centre,
The yellow line down the middle is simply a guide line, nothing more.

Gra.

Well done Gra!

Do you get any benefits from passing the local test, over and above driving on a foreign (UK) license? In Romania I'm supposed to surrender my UK license for a Romanian license as a resident. Bugger that for a game of soldiers, I just pretend I've just arrived if Garja ask me anything.

The good thing about keeping the UK license if Garja take it off me, is I can simply tell DVLC I've lost it and get a replacement!

Hi Clive,
In China not allowed to drive with anything except Chinese licence.
No UK, No USA, no International, no nothing.

Only the Chinese licence.

Gra.

That's good. It used to be the case that UK residents, who couldn't pass our test, would take a test in a country with an easier test, and then have it converted to a UK licence.

Roger

I am still amazed at how in depth the Chinese test is.

Here a few to look at.

Bloody hell!

A certificate from the British Red Cross, or similar, Is a must.

And preferably a 5 day course at that.

I remember my instructor, a doctor, asking "is resuscitation for the living or the dead".

All in all, very hard questions, and the literal translations don't help.
