Just thought I'd fill you all in on my gearbox problems so you might
avoid doing the same thing as me! Rodney at Wholesale Automatics has
confirmed my diagnosis that it's burnt out one of the clutch sets for
3rd & reverse. This has been caused by the throttle position sensor
cable snapping a few months ago and me continuing to drive like that. I
figured it would be fine till I could get round to repairing the cable
but it seems all that time it's been wearing the clutches away because
they won't have been getting as much pressure applied to them as they
need according to Rodney.
It's a bit worrying that a cable snapping can lead to the box self
destructing. I've not done all that many miles in that time or driven it
hard so if it happened in the desert I'd guess it would fail very
quickly.
Rodney has also confirmed that with swapping some parts a box off a 4.5
petrol that I was offered will fit (bell housing, torque converter and
TPS cable needed).
Anyone know any good auto box rebuilders or alternatively breakers that
might have them?
Best regards,
Jon.
