Importing vehicles from Japan

Has anyone here got any experience of importing vehicles from Japan or
know of any good reference sites?
I've got one or two questions about vehicle modifications pre
registration in this country that I need to ask.
Thanks.

Used to do it back in 1999. I believe things have changed since then, but
feel free to drop me a line / call / email.
All the best,

Thanks Mike.
Basically I'm toying with importing an 80 series from Japan and then
retro fitting a 3rd row of seats to it before putting it through the
SVA test and then registered in the UK.
I would basically pick it up from the docks and then take it away for
fitting the fog lights, etc and the 3rd row of seats before getting it
tested and registered.
I'm trying to establish if I can can do that or if I need to put the
car through more rigourous testing.

Hi Julien
I can`t see much of an issuewith retrofitting seats in the back as they are
standard in the UK.In fact my cars have bolt holes for seats(?)under the
carpet.
The testing was also pretty straight: no dial change nec. , no additional
lights ; all the cars passed without any issues. only one was a little rich
mixture wise but this was ok on offering to have it adjusted. you DO NOT
need any agent here as customs is straight forward and usually done by the
shipping company. but its a DIY thing as so easy. the only thing u need is
some agent in Japan to buy for u. This should be around 2-300 ?. shipping
can be cheaper if u organise it from here urself( 800 US against 700 ?) ROLL
ON ROLL OFF. FORWARDING is usually done by the jap. agent. so thats that.
By the way do u still have the 2 passwords for the auctions,if so - i have
lost them due to computer crash - please send them.
all the best
mike

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the info.
Interesting to know. I would actually be interested to take a look at
an import at some point just to see how much work would be involved in
fitting the seats.
As for the Japan end, I have a contact who will find exactly what I am
looking for at the right price and condition. He does it a lot for a
company in Canada and knows TLCs and charges a standard $1000 fee. It
is a little bit pricey, but more specialised than your average agent.
As for the passwords:

Julian,
The third row seats are not a simple bolt in. I was going to fit
them to mine and looked in to it. There are different wheel arches,
mine don,t have the shape on them for the seat mount. I believe the
boot floor is different, I recall there was a couple 0of bars recessed
in to the floor for the seats that mine does not have.

Hi Lubomir,
I think they are Left hand drive over there, but they are importing the
right hand drive Japanese models.

Hi Clive,
It would be nice, but suspected it wouldn't be the case. but with a
plasma cutter, mig welder and suitabel donor hope I can do something.

Hi Julian
That's what i was afraid of -it is hell of a job to change the
steering wheel and the car should have automatic transmission -
otherwise i've heard that the
best used car is Japan's used one :)

Just to follow up on the importing idea, do any of you recall the
shipping and import fees at our end for importing a vehicle?
I need the shipping costs for a TLC from Japan to here (roughly) as
well as any recommendations for shipping companies.
I am also trying to get estimates for what the tax costs will be at
this end -I'm guessing something around 5% import tax and then the VAT
on top of that.
Any pointers from someone that has done it recently would be
apprecaited.

In 1999 I paid =A3850 RoRo. The shipping was arranged at the Japan end.
Why 5%? As far as I know, car from outside the EU is liable for 10% import
duty and 17.5% VAT based upon the Customs' own valuation, not the invoice.
Add on a couple of hundred for agent fees etc etc.
You can collect it from the dockside and drive it for a single journey home.
Get insurance using the chassis number for that journey until it's all
plated.
It's a long time since I did it, if anything else springs forth, I'll post
it later.
Off to watch James Bond....

Hi Neill,
OK, I thought it would be in the ?1k mark.
OK. I guestimated the 5% - a while back I looked at importing some parts from
the US and the import tax was all in the region of 0-5%.
Yes, I'll be paying slightly more to someone I know, but he knows TLCs and also
will be finding a very specific spec for me.
OK. I would be inclined to just pick it up on a trailer.
Thanks, every bit helps.
At the moment it is working out to cost about ?12k to import what I want which
is a little bit more than getting something similar over here, but then I'm
guaranteed to get exactly what I want.
