Looks like more major surgery is needed on the old girl.

I have sourced a secondhand head from a motor that died due to bottom end problems so, it will be out with the spanners next weekend.

While swapping the head what other jobs would it be wise to carry out while she is stripped? I have already thought water pump and cam belt + idler/tensioner, and maybe get the injectors serviced... anything else?

Would it be a good move to fit new valve guide oil seals onto the s/h head or do these never fail?

if it were mine I'd check its true and skim if needed (never know with a secondhand head), decoke ports and polish, check valve seats and lap in if needed, new valve stem seals, re-shim the valve clearances

skim and pressure test the new head dude, u never know...
as above, give the top end internals a good going over.
so we both have the same problem then?

Thanks chaps, I guess a pressure test and possible skim would be a wise move.

It sounds like it :|

The Tax is due the end of this month so, I might just SORN her for a month and take my time getting her right.

Picked up a secondhand head yesterday off Steff.

Decided to stripp it down today and lap the valves in etc, oh joy, No2 exhaust post looks like it has had water in

It cleaned up okay but, could this much rust be caused by the head sitting somewhere damp if that valve was the one open (cam was still fitted) or, is this a sign of a cracked head?

N04 inlet valve guide also had a large piece missing and the valve must have been bent as it would only 'lap up' along one edge :(

Bugger :(

Hello, hello, hello
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone at home?

Relax, relax, relax
I need some information first.
Just the basic facts.
Can you show me where it hurts?

I have become comfortably numb.

HI Paul

Pretty limited knowledge on heads but it might be worth giving Julian V a call and asking for his advice?

Good luck

Can't help you too much with the head issue but that's one of my favourite Pink Floyd numbers if that's any help?

Paul.

The head gasket may have gone on the previous engine, no definate clue if it is a problem with the head unless you get it crack tested. As you say it could also have been because it was standing somewhere damp. That looks like fresh rust on there rather than damage from a cracked head or damaged gasket.

it wouldent look like that if you had a cracked head as the water is burned of before it gets chance to rust but i would still get it pressure tested and skimed

Yep think you are right, only chance for that to build up in the engine is if there is a major leak that carries on after the engine has run and the engine is left there standing.

You can get that kind of rust very quickly even overnight as others have said looks fresh :) I'd still get it tested & skimmed if it were me though :) you don't want to commit to all that work just to find it's a pear :|

I wonder what ever happened to the missing bit :?: :!:

Thanks for the replies chaps, I will be taking the head off my 80 tomorrow so will post my findings.

The original plan was to do a quick valve lap on the secondhand head and then swapping it for mine but, after paying £250 for it I don't want to start spending more money on it to put right the wrongs :(

Got the head off today and couldn't see any signs of obvious head gasket or head problems.

but there was water in No6 bore, there was a slight ring of fresh rust before I cleaned it up.

Have a look at this close up..... someone please tell me it isn't what I think it is

So these Land Cruisers aren't as bomb proof as we think :(

No idea Ryan, it looks like it has been there for some time.

It looks worse than it feels, it is virtualy as smooth as the rest of the bore... but that certainly looks like a crack to me.

It looks like there may be a bit of a water stain under that crack. It may have been sucking out the coolant/ water through the crack into the cylinder. Would explain the excessive use of water you experienced on your trip

There are companies about that specialise in repairing engine blocks, though for the labour cost you would probably be better off sourcing a working motor or  It might also be worth looking into a new 4.2 non turbo Diesel motor. I am not all that clued up on them but it might be possible to use that with your existing ancileries (turbo, fuel system, exhaust etc...)

I could be talking complete rubbish a i'm not all that clued up on the diesels. But it may be worth starting to look at your options.

There's a 74000 mile 1HD-FTE on the bay for £1650 buy it now.

Item No. 160486317123

There's also a Guy in Oz doing modified looms so they connect up to the older trucks ok.
