Hi guys
Can any of you advise on the following?
1) does the diesel engine derivative of the 80 reaquire a bigger
intercooler? (the disco owners do this a bit to increase bhp)
2)can u get a K&N air filter for it, and if so where from?
3)what oils go into the engine/gearbox/xfer box/diffs/swivels?
4)where do I get service items from (difflock for oils but what about
filters?
Cheers
dyf

Hi Dyfed
The intercooler for the 80 is bigger bacause the bigger the engine the
bigger the inter cooler. Theres a great guy on the list his name is Matt
Savage from Matt savage intercoolers, im sure he will help .
Engine requires 15w40 gearbox dexron 11, 75 w90 for the transfere box and
the diffs like the hypod 80 or 90 L S D oil I think.
Have a look at Milner off road for service things.

Dyfed,
The auto box spec has gone up to Dex 3.

You probably can, but frankly it's money thrown away and it's not that

Next time you travel to the continent check prices of filters, belts,

Sorry roman was supposed to answer the first thing too..
What do you mean not very good for your engine?
I was told these filters let air in more freely which is a good thing isnt
it?

Dyfed,
Exactly, because K&N filters have bigger appretures they do let air
in more freely, which means they also let dirt in more freely. Which
is not a good thing, is it?

I run a K&N filter on my 80 with positive results, better engine response.
Also they are easy to clean and you have it for life hence no need to
replace as you do with paper filters.
Here in Aust we get bucket loads of dust and the K&N seems to cope with
it well.

Hello Marek (or should I say witaj?)
Yes, I know. Compared to paper it looks such a good idea. But only o
paper :). Have you ever closely inspected a used K&N filter? If you
did you would find tiny lumps of dust that cling to the inside
surface of the mesh. It's dust accumulating in the folds. What you see
is not all of it because the rest has gone through the engine. The K&N
filter does let more air in not because it has a bigger surface but
because it has bigger holes.
I've used K&N filters in Africa and were not impressed. Even with a
cyclone snorkel they are not as effective as ordinary paper filters.
Having said that, I remember the time I drove a Landrover across
Tunisia without a filter at all (following a turbo failure) and still
didn't manage to kill the engine :)
And finally, when you compare the price of paper filters vs K&N + oil,
cleaning the filter is not worth the bother.

I run a K&N and have done for a couple of years and yes they do flow more.
I can see exactly what you are saying Roman-you make sense as always!
The only thing I can say of interest, is that when I had an oil analysis
done (oil about 3k old) the Silicon level was 7ppm "which shows the air
filter and intake system are working correctly and effectively".

If K&N are the wet foam type then the effectiveness is dependent on the
oil used and regular cleaning and re-oiling. Too much hassle and not
necessary for normal UK use I imagine.

Hi Dyfed,
The 80s don't come with Intercoolers as standard, but you can get kits
for them ranging in price from around ?550 + VAT - most of the kits
result in a boost in power and torque of around 30%.
Yes you can. But not advisable for longevity. Check out the following
article:
http://www.lcool.org/technical/80_series/filters.html
Best to check in the manual and then decide if you want to go the
synthetic route or not. Many people swear by Amsoil products but they
are expensive and hard to get hold of.
Http://www.milneroffroad.com, although I would prefer to go to the
dealer for brake pads and have used my local auto factors for things
like filters.

Hypoid 80-90 is fine john, but no L S D (stands for Limited Slip Diff.).
O.K. in some 70s but not in the 80 Series.
