got close this time though, we planned a visit that had to be cancelled.

sitting at gate 5 at the minute, flying to Brum, via Frankfurt.

That's meant to be the correct way to join - shouldn't use a shackle in case it disintegrates and turns into a missile ;)
 
Looks like you guys need a Strap Snake. I'd better get the website built and some product on the shelf. Nudge nudge.
 
I'm going to disagree with that method of joining two straps actually. Well why not. The yellow strap is quite badly twisted and not pulling on the eye as it should Essentially it's been made into a 'Lark's head' which is not the way to take the load. The stick now actually has load going across it. More a constricting force really. In my view the two straps should be laid parallel to each other and the end of one passed through the eye of the other and then the opposite at the other end. The stick or rolled up newspaper can then be put in the joint to allow it to be undone. Now we can disagree all day on this one but that's they way I'd do it. The eyes on the end, once the two straps are pulled together then mate very neatly and don't pull the stitching In fact like this ....

 
All the recovery advice i have received is to never use a towball for a recovery. They often break and form a projectile.
