LJ70 Build Thread!

Well that really is great news,

A step in a good direction.

Congrats'

Gra.

Great news! Congrats mate! Looking forward to seeing some of your creations! :)

Fantastic news Ben! All the more greener with envy! Got to agree with Chas, you really do get all the luck lol.

Wow! Thanks for all your kind words and support guys.

On the face of it my life at the horse place seemed perfect!

All my washing and food provided and cooked for me, young horsey girls in jodhpurs every where, a huge workshop that I could use when I wanted to do work on LJ, tractors, quad bikes, and LandCruisers to drive everyday, and living and working with/for some great people.

But there were a few issues that I wasn't happy about.

My room/shed wasn't insulated meaning in the summer it was boiling hot and infested with mozzies and in the winter (now) very cold and damp. Most mornings I would wake up to find condensation dripping from the ceiling. I discovered the back of the door was getting very damp which meant I couldn't hang clothes on the back of it as they would start going moldy.

I raised these issues with my employers on a number of occasions over the last few months and nothing was done about it.

I didn't have my own bathroom and instead had to use the facilities used by the general public which were far from private and very dirty and grotty and not exactly next door to my shed.

My working hours were meant to be 8-5 however I never got to finish at 5pm and if I ever said I needed to finish at 5pm this was always an issue for them and caused trouble. In the summer I was expected to work till 7.30/8pm every night and in the winter it would be 6pm because it got too dark.

Wanting to take any time off was a huge issue for them, despite them saying I was entitled to 4 weeks holiday time per year. I booked Thursday off as I had a wedding I had to go to and despite giving them 3 weeks notice this was a huge issue and they really were not happy about letting me take a day off. :wtf:

The work had been slowly getting to me. Working in rain and mud all day putting fences up for 6 weeks was not fun and not what I had given up a good job in the UK to come to Australia to do.

Now all of that is fine for a while, but after 4 months I'd had enough........................

Telling my boss yesterday that Id given it a lot of thought and decided I want to leave didn't go down well. :icon-rolleyes:

Him and his wife said some really terrible things to me and told me they wanted me off the property immediately. :wtf:

Fortunately my friend Michael came to my rescue.

Some one had borrowed his truck so he went and hired one and dropped everything he was doing and came to collect all my stuff.

We moved all my stuff to his house last night and hes said I can live here with him and his fiance in there large house and rent one of the spare rooms. Ultimately I'd like my own place, but I think it could be a lot of fun living here with them. There not actually here that much as they both work long hours. LJ will be living in the garage next to Michael's gleaming white 80. :icon-biggrin: :icon-cool:

Feels so nice to be waking up in a warm central heated house with wifi and having my own bathroom again is great.

Obviously because the proverbial well and truly hit the fan yesterday with me saying I wanted to move on I had to cancel my place on 4wd trip. Which was a shame as all those tracks will now be closed till November.

But...........................

I've now got a few days off to sort my stuff out. :icon-smile:

Then next week my mate who has been working in the mines in Western Australia for the past 4 months is flying into Melbourne and were then flying up to the Gold Coast, hiring a car and having a few days relaxing in Byron Bay! :icon-cool:

I've worked extremely hard for the past 4 months since I arrived here in Australia so I'm really looking forward to having my first week off!

Especially as I will be spending time in my favorite place in Australia and it will be a hell of a lot warmer than down here.

Then when I get back I start my new job! :banana-linedance:

The new job is going to be awesome! My hours will be 8 till 4, or if I want 9-5. I will be spending 2-3 days a week welding and fabricating and then the rest of the week will be spent working on customers 4wd's, designing and developing new products and any other jobs that need doing.

They are super flexible about me having time off, and as the company is run by 4wders they understand I may need a month off at some point for a huge epic adventure up to Cape York or across the Simpson Desert or up to the Kimberlys. :icon-twisted:

They said I can either use some of my 4 weeks yearly holiday or take it unpaid, there very flexible. :icon-biggrin:

Me and Michael are already planning some trips.

I've also been invited on a huge adventure/trip for towards the end of next year. I'm not sure I can say too much just yet, but there are some great people going and it should be being filmed for a dvd and magazine. :eusa-shhh:

So the future is looking bloody awesome!

Just a shame yesterday was so stressful and it ended so badly at the horse place.

Oh well.....................onwards and upwards guys! :icon-biggrin:

Nice one Ben ... ... as someone said previously ... you could fall in the dunny and come out smelling of roses ..

i'm genuinely please it has worked out so well for you .. :icon-cool:

holy chit!, you sure hid those problems with the previous employer well! sounds like you made a lucky escape getting out of there, not people I would want to be working with, well done on the new job B)

In the short few months that you arrived in Aus you have deffo gone native, which is brilliant and just goes to show that this was the right move for you. Shame that the horse place didn't work out in the end but you wouldn't have been there forever in any case and it's just fantastic that the new job is the next step in your life/adventure.

All I would say is that the horsey place offered you the initial stability you needed when you arrived and that they offered this to a stranger, so whilst it didn't work out in the end just remember that the hand of friendship was extended in those early days when you needed it most and this all came about from a fireside chat at Lincomb.

Leaving all that aside, your next chapter had begun and, boy what a chapter. I know you'll make the most of it and who knows what that will eventually lead onto so carry on living the dream Ben, we wish it was us and are all rooting for you.

As a good friend once said to me when I got a leg up in life "enjoy and don't f**k it up"

Nicely done Ben. Interesting how people always show their true colours eventually. What a curious mentality and mindset of your previous employers. They didn't deserve someone of your calibre.

Enjoy the new chapter in your life!!

Good move Ben, we kind of thought it might go pair shaped, and at least you were prepared! Next year will be huge! ;-)

Thanks guys I appreciate the support.

I've had a great day settling in to my new home.

Went shopping with Michael and his mrs and got my food for the week.

Then this afternoon spent the last few hours having a beer watching 4wd videos with Michael. :icon-biggrin:

I havnt got anymore trips planned for the next month, and Michael is taking his 80 off the road to have some custom flares built, new wheels fitted and a bit of bodywork.

So the plan is to strip the front axle down on LJ and get my ARB locker re-fitted and replace every oil seal and bearing. Also need to see what discount I will get on a winch from my new employer! :icon-wink:

The showroom they've got looks awesome! So many bits and pieces Id like.

Need to get myself a Doug's Tub for the glove box as I spotted them in the showroom on my trial day. :icon-cool:

Anyway................................................

As soon as Michael gets his 80 back and LJ is back together were going to hit some really tough, extreme tracks he knows of. There very rocky and Michael says there un-drivable without winching. Will be interesting to see how LJ goes fully locked with the 37"s aired down to 10psi. :icon-twisted:

You must be the luckiest man on earth i know of Ben. It's a shame your previous bosses was such dickheads (sorry 'bout that, but if you have employers you're gonna have to take care of them, and keep your promises, or else you're gonna have a baad time)

But it is very good to hear things seems to work out for you once again!! Best of luck to you man =)

Thanks Victor.

I worked really really hard for them and did some excellent work. The veranda I built turned out great. I said to them when I said I wanted to leave and they started giving me a hard time, that the last 4 months had been mutely beneficial. They got a load of building work done to a very high standard and I obviously got a roof over my head and food in my stomach. But they couldn't see it. :?

Oh well almost holiday time!

My mate has just booked our flights to the Gold Coast. :icon-cool:

Hey Ben I would not give your last employer the time of day as have been in almost the exact same situation as you here in the UK. I worked in polo when i landed in the Uk for some 7 years and my last employer sounds just like yours was. I gave him 2 years of blood sweat and hard work with not one day off and being on call 24/7. Dont get me wrong the money was good but just because he was a wealth guy he thought he "owned" me and when it came to say im off he too said he wanted me off the property in 24h was not going to pay me for my holiday i had not taken and likewise was a real ass about it and threw his toys out the cot.

last I heard his business went tits up and he has just sold off his estate to get himself out of bankruptcy so all is well that ends well but know exactly how you must have been feeling. Its great to have mates that helped you out and likewise a good friend put me up for a few months after we moved and we have not looked back.

All the best and onwards and up as they say.

Good luck in your new venture Ben,:icon-cool: All's well that ends well as WS would say. Your first boss as Trevor said "gave you the initial stability you needed when you arrived" but now you can put the unpleasantness behind and look to the future which is going to be just great for you.

PS

We are not at all jealous, Oh no, not at all.

Thanks guys.

Time for a couple of pics.

LJ had suddenly developed an annoying electrical fault where by the central locking would lock all the doors but then wouldn't unlock any of them.

I had a look in the FSM and decided there were a couple of components in the drivers door which could be causing the issue. This was of course after checking and changing the fuse of course.

Fortunately I brought a spare door out here with me (thanks Karl), so the first thing I did was try another switch.

P1050343_zpsdb003dd5.jpg

The switch didn't fix the problem so next thing I thought it might be was door control unit, which I'm guessing is just a relay(s).

P1050345_zpsac116b0a.jpg

Swapping that didnt fix the problem.

P1050344_zps7eba0d00.jpg

So that just left the actual mechanism that has a switch on it which when the key is put in the door and turned to lock/unlock, it moves this pressure switch which I think must switch a relay which locks/unlocks all the other doors.

It was very fiddly to get off, but once off it was obvious it too had been effected by LJ being parked in that puddle at Lincomb for an hour.

Some of the pivot points on the mechanism were very dirty, stiff and tight, so I got it on the bench to clean and grease it.

P1050348_zps05e43474.jpg

P1050350_zps9abd1195.jpg

The switch is the piece on the right with the little black, rubber bellows covering it.

P1050351_zps11a6d3b2.jpg

Cleaned and greased I re-fitted it and the central locking was now working perfectly again.

Then the next morning I discovered it had stopped working again, and now hasn't worked since.

I'm now thinking of changing the complete locking mechanism off the spare door.

Thats my next little job to do on LJ, then I want to get the front axle done. :icon-smile:

A couple of pics from the other night. Was a late one as had to unload the truck and take the rental truck back that night. Was about 1.30am when I finally got to bed. :sleeping-sleep:

P1050352_zpsaa3079a6.jpg

P1050353_zps487e4384.jpg

In complete contrast this was how last night was spent........................................

Relaxing on Michael's leather sofa, watching monster truck racing on his 62" TV, drinking my favorite beer! :icon-cool:

P1050354_zps86a09b3e.jpg

P1050358_zps81fa3e16.jpg

This was a pic from when me, Michael and his mate had a night out in the city last week. We were drinking beautiful German beer all night at a pub that specializes in European beer. :obscene-drinkingbu:

image_zps0bf625b0.jpg

I need to sort all my tools and stuff out in his garage today so I can get LJ in. :icon-biggrin:

I got all my stuff sorted out and made space for LJ in Michael's garage.

P1050359_zps7061bd53.jpg

P1050360_zpsf398b5be.jpg

Then Michael asked if I fancied coming out with him to see what he does for work and giving him a hand.

I thought it might be a boring job cleaning carpets, but Michael specializes more in insurance work and in particular flood and fire damage.

Our first job was a flood. In some ones house the main water pipe to there dish washer had split and flooded the entire house.
We got to the job and Michael fired up the huge water pump/vacuum machine in the back of his van and ran the hose into the house.

I then spent the next couple of hours riding Rover around the house and sucked up 600 litres of water!

photo_zpsfb3f894a.jpg

We then brought air movers (special fans) and big dehumidifiers in and set them all up. They will then be left running 24 hours a day for the next 4-5 days.

I found it all quite interesting and it certainly felt good to be helping people. :icon-smile:

The company then paid for me and Michael to have an amazing steak in the the city.

Yesterday after going and removing equipment from a few jobs Michael took me to meet some friends of his, Simon and Miranda.

Simon and Miranda own and run a production company making 4wd programs. Last year they produced 110 30min shows that are on TV over here every week.

http://www.your4x4.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=82&Itemid=100

They are both great people and Simon took me into the studio/office and spent a few hours showing me some footage from some of the places theyve been to and some of there favorite bits of the shows. :icon-biggrin:

Some of the 4wding they filmed in Hawaii and Thailand was crazy! As was this years Tuff Truck event which I really wanted to go to.

The 40 series hes built is amazing and hes got some great videos of him driving it off road.

I was discussing with him the state of the 4wd industry in Australia, and what 4wd Action/Tigerz11 and Roo Systems are doing. :icon-rolleyes:

He then started telling me about a chap who had arranged for a landcruiser to go to Roo Systems to have a lot of work done to it to get it ready for a big outback trip, and how they had made a complete mess of the truck and had fitted second hand suspension instead of new, and a huge list of other really bad things.

I said thats my mate Tony! How did you hear about that and he said hed rear the report.

So it looks like some pretty big people in the industry over here know about what they did to Tony's 40.

Simons gorgeous 40 series wasnt at the house unfortunately.

But his 80 was with its 5" suspension lift, 35" tyres and hundreds of spot lights.

P1050363_zps4684ed12.jpg

After a very enjoyable few hours spent with Simon and Miranda we came home and had a look at fitting Michael's prototype front drive shaft that hes had made for his suzuki.

P1050364_zpsf86a2533.jpg

It needs a bit more machining on a lathe because its a little bit too big.

P1050365_zps68b0a10b.jpg

P1050366_zpsb31abe65.jpg

After putting his Suzuki back in the garage we could finally put LJ in.

P1050369_zpsc0300203.jpg

P1050372_zps67cfb471.jpg

I'm now looking at which bits to order for the front axle rebuild.

So I want genuine KOYO bearings to replace the 4 king pin bearings, 4 wheel bearings, and the 4 bearings inside the front diff.

Genuine Toyota outer oil seals for the front axle, and the pinion oil seal on the front diff.

I'm going to buy some Trail Gear bits....................................

I want to do away with the OEM felt, rubber and thin metal setup on the front ball swivels and fit this:

http://locktup4x4.com.au/trail-safe-wiper-ball-kit-1356.html

I'm also going to try some of there inner axle seals which will work out cheaper than Genuine Toyota and should in theory be better.

http://locktup4x4.com.au/heavy-duty-front-inner-axle-seals-pair-274.html

Now in my mission to build a super tough and reliable 4wd I'm thinking should I not also fit an uprated set of CV's or CV's and shafts? :icon-twisted:

Sure its more expense but the idea is to fully rebuild the front axle and diff, get the diff professionally rebuilt with my air locker and all new bearings and seals. Replace all the wheel bearings and king pin bearings upgrade to new wiper ball kit, so that hopefully It will all be reliable and I wont have to touch the front axle again for a while.

http://locktup4x4.com.au/longfield-30-spline-superset-969.html

http://locktup4x4.com.au/dirty-30s-30-spline-cv-axle-kit-1336.html

Thee only issue is that both longfield and the dirty 30's are made from chromoly which wears very quickly especially compared to standard OEM ones.

Michael has got longfield shafts and CV's on his 80 but he wont run them all the time as they wear far too quickly apparently. So he only fits them when he runs his 37" trepador tyres.

Not a huge issue on LJ as obviously on road the front hubs are un-locked and it just runs in 2wd and I dont do huge miles anyway. Although I am planning some huge trips. :icon-biggrin:

But then I've never broken a shaft or CV yet and thats despite driving LJ pretty hard at times. But I guess it would be better to upgrade now and prevent blowing a shaft/CV when I get some where like the Telegraph Track in the middle of Cape York. :icon-twisted:

Another job I need to do is to replace the leaking milner rear main seal with a genuine Toyota one. Not a job I'm looking forward to because I remember how heavy and awkward the gearbox/transferbox is to get out. :|

At the same time I'm going to replace the engine sump as it looks very rusty in one corner, and as its off an IFS 4-runner is holds less oil. I'm going to fit the bigger, rust free sump I got off Johnie. :icon-smile:

Almost forgot.......................

My mate flies in to Melbourne today from Western Australia and we fly to the Gold Coast tomorrow morning.

Flights and accommodation booked we just need to decide what hire car we want to get.

Spending 5 days and 4 nights in Byron Bay. :icon-cool:

I'm also going to take him to the craziest place I've ever camped in Australia....................Nimbin!

All sounds good Ben, don't forget that Fridayman is up around there somewhere too.

Blimey, small world, Simon is a friend of Chris from FNB! He sent him the report. Will try and catch up,with him next time we are there.

Have a great break on the Gold Coast.

Cheers,

Thanks guys.

Picked my mate up from the airport and now enjoying a few ice cold beers. Off out for an Indian shortly.

Just booked the taxi to take us to the airport in the morning and booked a Ford Falcon as our hire car. We havnt had to give any card details yet so if we find any companies with LandCruisers to hire we might be getting a 200 series instead!

Hotter weather and beer here we come! :violin:
