long term storage

we are returning to the uk for the birth of no.2, so since we will be in the
uk for anything up to 6 months, i want to put my truck into "storage" in our
garage.
what i will be looking to do is:
put the vehicle up on axle stands and remove the wheels.
store the wheels in the back of the truck.
drain the engine oil.
disconnect the batteries, get them fully charged and then stored in the
house.
is this the right procedure and is there anything else i should consider?
with no batteries etc the alarm/central locking will be disabled but will i
at least i'll be able to lock/unlock and therefore get into the truck after
a six month gap?

hi Fred,
i've never put a car into storage, but personally i wouldn't bother draining
the oil, the rest sounds right.
i don't suppose you have a friendly neighbour around that could fireit up and
run it every few weeks.
i guess in kenya rust isn't too much of a problem, but what about vermin
getting into the garage and chowing down on your pipework? we have problems
here with mice getting in and chewing anything rubber - could you have the
same problems in your garage?
even with no battery you should be able to lock and unlock the doors manually
using the key.

As for draining fluids, there are several theories on this. My opinion
is that it is best to keep all the fluids in the car, and change them
_before_ you start the car again. Having a full fuel tank, oil in the
engine etc... prevents rust from forming on iron bits and seals/rubber
hoses from getting dry and brittle.
Interesting thread, I will have to garage a car for a year myself in
the near future.
Cheers,
Frederik
