Hello all,

I would like to know if the 1990 LJ70 with round head lights (2-LT engine) has standard a LSD differential on the rear. I've got a hunch that my LSD doensn't work properly anymore or maybe I even don't have one.

Is there also a way to modify the differential so I can "easily" lock it without welding the 2 planetary gears? I work at a metal work shop so welding/milling/lasercutting etc is no problem for me. Somebody did this before? I don't want to spend a lot of money on buying a locker for as I don't use the car much for (extreme) offroad.

Thank you in advance!

If you have LSD diff, you will see LSD stick in the rear of diff. cover and you could see it in the plate with VIN number in the engine bay.
See picture below:

G145 will be
G = 8" diameter crown wheel
14 = 4.875:1 ratio
5 = 4 pin LSD
So if you have 5 in this plate, you'll have rear LSD diff.

If you have LSD is most important use correct OIL, if not this will not work
Use only LSD EPX90 oil (SAE 90 for l.s.d.)

Hi there!

Thank you for the excellent explaination! It seems I have G144, so not with LSD?

Yes, G144 = 4.875 gear ratio - open diff - standard
