Just briefly...
Can anyone tell me where I can locate the standard UK spec for 80 series
vehicles? Be handy when checking for import and UK spec for things like
front and rear difflocks etc.
Also interested in what people think is high, low and average mileage for 80
series in respect of engine components, belts, bearings, transmissions,
transfer boxes etc. I know a lot depends on use, towing etc but guidelines
would be helpful.
And some advice on notorious rust spots underneath would be appreciated....
I'm very grateful for all the responses and help I have had so far...

Got rusty bits have we?
Here this...
A farmer once had a white Cruiser - the Beast had no name...
One damp day his jealous tractor rammed its door...
But the Cruiser refused to get lame...
So the farmer, in the myths or lore...
Began the neverending archetypal game...
A little rust is okay - mine was the result of the door being replaced by the said farmer but there is a special liner that limits rust attack, and the new door hadn't had this waterproof membrane added, so, there is rust but it generally doesn't seem to be a problem, I keep on fixing it every now and again when it needs it, i could have the whole door replaced but this is not an option.
You can have the underside steam-cleaned and this will show up rust spots if you have them.
Re the other bits, I'm not such a stickler to rules as I used to be, but I do follow the manual as regards to belts, hoses and lifetimes for lubricants and such like - sometimes they don't really need replacing, but I do it anyway, as I hold a "kitty" of Beast bits for when just such a time arrives. So far this has limited the costs of having expensive replacements.
Check your calipers (front) at about 130,000miles, the back ones generally have a longer life. This was a costly repair (front) and it took time to have this done, it was =A3550 including VAT, labours, parts, warranty etc., which I thought was very good, especially when a garage (who shall remain nameless) quoted me at least =A31500....
Also be on the look out for electrical faults - you can't always see if there is a problem until the situation is pretty desperate - =A32000 as I had a short circuit under my bonnet - and this was PRETTY serious - at the time i had no choice, the garage (who shall remain nameless...) charged over =A32000 for the repairs - it was with them for a month...this happened at about 127,000 miles, just something to look out for - check circuitry and current on a regular (frequent) basis, just for peace of mind really.
I'll have to get the Birfield issue sorted out sooner or later but its not that important to worry much about it at the moment
cheers

Jeremy, when I was looking for my 80 ( Feb 2003) I used the following
sources for generalized info. Haynes workshop manual, roadtests in
Diesel Car mag, various 4X4 mags. Parkers guides give a bacic
chronological change to the specs. This gave me a good indication of the
changing spec of UK vehicles . I had no knowledge of Jap spec vehicles
at the time and with hindsight I realise I could have come unstuck big
time if I had bought one - no 24 volt starting - no difflocks ( no pun
intended ). My '97 GX has heated seats, ABS and differs only from a VX
in that it has cloth seats and manual trans, which are both features
that I wanted . Earlier GX models were a lot more basic. Mine also has
the dealer spec sunroof. I beleive some of members have the CD parts /
spec lists. Have a look for an owners handbook on EBAY.
Regards Gareth Jones. '97 1-HDFT S.Wales.
