OK so not a 4x4 trip but as most you know I am a scout leader and last year we were fund-raising toward a trip to Nepal to trek up to Everest Basecamp.
So 14 months of fund-raising and training walks have now passed and departure is on Monday. Needless to say there are some very excited teenagers on our hands (and three big kids who are bricking it).
We will be completely off the radar for the three weeks we will be in Nepal so there wont be any daily updates but if all goes to plan we will do a bit of a presentation at Lincomb in May and after that Ill post it up here so those who cant make it to Lincomb can see it.
Id like to thank the club and everyone who supported us at Lincomb last Oct for helping us raise the money needed to make this trip possible.
Some info about the trek:
We lave from London on 18th March and arrive in kathmandu in the evening 19th March we will spend a day in Kathmandu then if the weather is good fly to Lukla 2,860 metres (9,383 ft)alt. The Tenzing-Hillary airport at Lukla is and interesting place to land a plane:http://youtu.be/f3bN4c7CfVM. For obvious reasons planes only fly to Lukla during perfect weather conditions so we have 3 "spare" days in hand in case we have to wait for it to clear.
Once we land at Lukla our trek begins. We will spend the next 14 days trekking to Everest Basecamp. On the way we will pass through Namche Bazaar, 3,440 metres (11,290 ft), Dingboche, 4,260 metres (13,980 ft), to Gorakshep and Everest South Basecamp 545 metres (18,192 ft). We will then summit Kala Patthar, 5,644.5 m (18,519 ft) and start our return trip to Lukla.
Depending on weather for flights to/from Lukla we may then have a few days to spend upon return to Kathmandu before returning to the UK on 22nd April and back to work the next day for a well earned rest!
There is a possibility the weather could end up being to poor to fly to Lukla in which case we will do an alternative trek in the Annapurna mountain range instead.
Here are a few pics of some of our training walks to as a starter:
First car up there for a few days!
Just finished packing tonight; All this.......
....... went in here! My worldly posessions for the next 3 weeks!
So thats pretty much it for now. There will hopefully be some good teasers for me to put up in 3 weeks time and then the presentation at Lincomb.
