Oil contamination

JB, have you thought about fuel tank condensation?
It happens if you run your tanks low for a while. It may cost a lot
but fill them up and then top-up when you use 20 litres - may be the
best though not the least expensive solution. At least to give you
time to get another analysis after following this regime after
changing your oil.

Jon,
Might be better than money in the bank at the moment - although you are
dragging a little extra weight around.
Are you suggesting that the water in the fuel might find it's way into the
oil, not come across that, where might the transfer occur?

past the rings?

Big problem with engines running on landfill gas for power generation is the
contamination of the oil by acidic elements in the blowby gasses add some
moisture and it eats the engine from the inside. Solution is top quality
oil, special plating on internals, special bearings and oil changes every
500 hours (400+ litres a change, 18 changes a year = 7200+ litres of oil!)

Do I remember reading somewhere that the oil level can give a falsely
high reading due to this, and that one should check it after a good run
has boiled off any water?

If there was that much water in the oil I would suggest the oil wants
changing immediately and the cause investigated. We never see more than a
fraction of a percent on sample analysis unless something is quite wrong.
