Oil quality

I've noticed CostCo are selling 4.5l of Castrol Magnatec GTD for =A314
which doesn't seem bad for a synthetic. Anyone know if it's actually any
good? It's what I normally use, and at just over =A330 for a full change
seems quite reasonably priced.
Best Regards,
Jon.

Jon,
I do not think that Castrol Magnatec is a synthetic oil.

Magnatec is a semi-synthetic oil.
Tesco diesel oil is virtually the same ACEA spec and is much cheaper.

I don't know Anthony. I read it off the back of a can of Magnatec I've got
sat in the garage.

Yes but I wish someone could tell me where to buy oil that doesn't
knacker the big ends!
I.e. Jap spec. Until I find some I'm using Carlube as it's cheap (?12
per 5 litre) and as well specified as most. No point paying the earth
unless I'm sure it's good and as the word is that just being quality
synthetic doesn't cure the problem.
I was going to use Amsoil synthetic as I believe the Aussies have got
some hard data on the fact that it is good in Cruisers but it's
expensive and not available in the UK. I tried the importers and they're
not responding. Keep saying they'll get some and never call me back.

It says synthetic engineering on it, but not synthetic so I expect
you're right. Sneaky bar stools.

I have been using Carlube fully synthetic 5W40 for a couple of years. Yes it's cheap but the spec. is good. I don't see the point in paying a fortune for some good advertising/packaging.
Amsoil is very good but too expensive and for how much better protection?
I have brought some Amsoil two-stroke back from the States as they definitely benefit from it (bike, chainsaws etc) but the cruisers uses way too much to ship it back.

Jon,
I think that when buying oil one has to read very carefully what the words
say, if it says full synthetic then that is what it is but based on or
contains can mean anything they want to so contains, is probably mineral oil
with a small amount of synthetic blended in. I do not know if there is an
industry standard in the oil business for quantifying contains, or based on.
Still there are quite a few Full Synthetics available now.
