I'm thinking of changing my choice of oil for next years trips to North Africa - at the moment its got Fuchs oil in the engine - I've only got about 3.5 ltrs of it left. I'd been using this for a number of years since I started travelling in NA, and got it (2 x 25 ltr drums) from a friend in Wales back in 2001 - it did well to last this long because I gather synth oil like bio oil degrades over a period of time, so am looking for a good alternative. If anybody's interested I'll provide a few details later this evening since I can't really remember its specs at the moment. At the time it was about =A375 per barrel/drum. I thought this was pretty good at the time and it did wonders for the engine in the desert - even a friend of mine whome I was travelling with in NA asked if I could spare a few litres, I had spare, and gladly let him have some.

That is a very good price for synthetic oil especially if it is full
synthetic. I would be very interested in the spec if you have time.

Renate is also thinking of doing the same to a degree there is a book on the
subject called THE ENGINE OIL BIBLE that will tell you all you need to know
about oil I think.

brand only by price and grade, I prefer to use full synthetic. I one reads
the small print many so called synthetics are "synthetic based" or contains
synthetic and avoid contravening trade description acts for making false
claims. Based or contains can mean any thing they normally do not say, so I
play it safe and buy a full synthetic. I believe there are a few advantages
as synthetic tend to hold grade under extremes and there have been claims
for longer oil change intervals. The other oils are probably OK it is just
my choice. Normal mineral oils have been used with success for many years
and some meet high classification standards. I have used synthetics for
quite a few years in other vehicles and have been impressed by the lack of
sludge even when greatly extending the intervals.

Hi guys
I found most of the stuff on oils that I have. The MOTOR OIL BIBLE has
a big warning on it about sending it in part or in whole to any one with
out written permission from the author. I can under stand why, he makes
money on the sale of the e books so I dont think I should go against
this. I will see if I can look him up some where and see what the story
is .

However I'm still wondering which oil I should be using that's available
in the UK? I have a Jap import so it has only done about 10,000 miles on
UK oil and I'd like to use one to avoid the bearing problems. But which?
Amsoil is pretty rare here, in fact I have no idea where to get it. Is
all Amsoil ok or just specific ones? So far I have been using Castrol
GTD because it was cheap and I thought why use expensive synthetic oil
as that still has problems if it's the wrong make. So I wonder does
anyone know of an oil that's readily available in the UK that is good
for my 1HD-T?
I tried discusssing this with Toyota but as expected they were simply
not interested in an old imported car.

Here is the only Guy who I know did or does Amsoil in the UK. Try
[Email address removed] . His name is Chas Stafford, and he is in North
Devon. He is a really nice guy. I was going to get a load of oil off him for
the engine and the gearbox aswell as the axels last year but it is much more
expensive than the Dino oil or other synthetics but is suppossed to be the
best. He probably remembers me because I nearly bought but found at that
time I could not afford it with the shipping. No body here in Ireland deals
in the Amsoil and it is expensive enough with out putting shipping charges
from the UK to Ireland on top of this aswell. If I could I would use the
Amsoil but its like every thing here nobody does the good stuff and to get
it shipped just adds to the cost. I use a dino oil called Maxol Optima
which is suppossed to be very good and only costs 99 Euro for 2x 23 litres.
I change the oil every 3000 miles like clock work. Try
[Email address removed] for the Redline I also tried them last year.

I've been reading and searching the web.
I am struggling to come up with a suitable oil readily available in the
UK! Has anyone found a Jap spec oil?
The best I have come up woth is Amsoil 15W/40 but it's being offered at
?36.50 per 5L plus shipping!
That's a little pricey and would make it cheaper to change the bearings
every 50K.

I know how you feel about the oil issue for your cruiser. I know Amsoil is
very expensive and I think I posted about that a while back, but it is
supossed to be the best. You pay for what you get. I love saying that
because thats all I hear other people say. Look it all comes down to money
in the end. If you use a really good oil it is better for your engine and
your turbo because it has better cleaning properties, and should not burn
off as easly at the high shear areas of the engine and will deal with the
heat of the turbo better unlike a normal mineral oil. In saying that the
cruisers have gone well on the normal 15w40 oil since they were built, once
the oil is changed regularly. There is no doubt that the synthetic oils are
better and some of them are better than others depending on the base stock
used, but there is a price to pay for this better stuff for the cruiser.
Some of the better synthetic oils will say they are good for extended oil
drains which is great and will bring down the price you pay for them by
about half if you compare like mileage for like. They will still work out
much dearer than a normal mineral oil and thats where you have to make the
choice and way it all up. Some of the newer cars are now saying they will go
20,000 miles with out an oil change on a good synthetic oil. But there is no
way I would do that and expect the engine to work well in a few years. All
that combustion going on in the engine with its residue and leaving it there
for 20,000 I dont think so. All oils degrade with time and wear in the
engine, some give better protection for longer than others, some have better
pour point, flash point, viscosity index, ash content, and other specs than
others but you will pay more much more for a better oil , there is no way of
getting out of it. I would love to change to a better oil , but even the
shipping from the Uk for 50 litres is around ? 80 then I would have to pay
for the oil.
Anyway look at cplubricants.co.uk they do a 15w40 for ?92 for 50 litres and
their specs are good.

Hi Ian
There are a few things you need to know before you do the switch to your
synthetic oil.
Do you have any seal or gasket leaks at all now, if you have, these will
possibly get worse because the synthetic oil is lighter than the mineral and
so will seep a little more..
Mineral oil builds up sludge and varnish on various parts of the engine and
seals over time and because of the better cleaning ability of the synthetic
oil, it will clean your engine much better than it has been up to now.
You could think about using a engine flush before you use the synthetic.
Amsoil do one which is supossed to be good. Im not too sure how much but I
think its one bottle for a normal engine so I would presume it would take
two bottles.
This will clean out most of the gunk in your engine rather than having it
floating around in there.
You should change your oil filter before you put the new oil in.
Step 1 Have your engine oil warm as usual before the change.
Step 2 Change your oil filter and put a new one on,
Step 3 Run engine to fill the new oil filter.
Step 4 Check dip stick and ensure there is room for the engine flush
either one or two bottles.
Step 5 Run engine for a few minutes to get the flush to work.
Step 6 Change oil and put new filter on.
The previous oil filter should have taken most of the dirt that was released
by the flush. It may also be a good idea for the first oil change with your
synthetic not to let it run for the 6000 miles as more stuff might come lose
from the better cleaning ability of the synthetic oil. I would also think
about changing the oil filter early just to help aswell.
