75 years ago today were the first combat operations with an anti-g suit. The "Franks suit" was being worn by pilots in Algeria on November 8th 1942.

For some time after, the RAF declined to wear these suits - partly because of the risk of being shot down over enemy territory and thus presenting the Germans with the technology, partly because we weren't convinced it worked, but mostly because the service could not agree on the correct tie and moustache to be worn whilst wearing it over your underwear.

(For the record the left hand photograph is the suit's inventor, Gp.Capt. Dr. Wilbur Rounding Franks OBE RCAF (1901-1986) ) When not growing elegant moustaches or inventing new flying clothing, Prof. Franks worked on cancer research and was one of the scientists who jointly showed that smoking caused lung cancer. Clever bloke really.)

St. Edmund, Saxon king of East Anglia, was martyred by the Vikings, who tied him to a tree, shot at him with arrows, then beheaded him. He gave his name to the town Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk. See

Princess Elizabeth (Queen Elizabeth II) married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten (Duke of Edinburgh) at Westminster Abbey. The BBC made the first tele-recording of the event, which was broadcast in the US 32 hours later.

HMHS Britannic was shaken by an explosion, caused by a naval mine, off the Greek island of Kea on the morning of 21 November 1916, and sank 55 minutes later, killing 30 people.
There were 1,065 people on board; the 1,035 survivors were rescued from the water and lifeboats. Britannic was the largest ship lost in WW1, and the sister ship of Titanic and Olympic.

1976: Rocky premiered in New York. Sylvester Stallone wrote the script himself during only three and half days, after seeing Muhammad Ali fight Chuck Wepner. Low budget, 1 M $, but the highest grossing film of 1976. 3 Oscars of 10 nominations.
