OT (or maybe not) - extending wifi range

Hi all,
What's the most convenient and inexpensive way of extending the range
of my wifi link using Sky Broadband wireless router (Netgear DG834GT)?
At the moment I can't move the router to another location in the
house, that's why I am looking at alternatives:
- Repeater, such as D-link Air DWL-900AP 802.11B Wireless Access Point/Repeater
- Replacement antenna (which?)
- Signal booster/amplifier (which?)
- Another access point/router, such as D-Link DWL-2100AP or another
While this seems to deviate from the canonic LC subject, perhaps I
should explain that while working in my garage situated across the
garden, I want to keep wireless access to this list and other LC
resources on the web.
I'll be grateful for your ideas.

I had a problem with poor signal on my daughter's computer.
I finally fixed it by buying a better antenna for the wireless card on the machine. It came from http://www.kenable.co.uk and did seem to deliver the advertised 7dB gain. Here's their product description from the invoice:
1 x Newlink WiFi Antenna 7dB High Gain Wireless Booster Aerial R-SMA (NLWL-ANTSMA) =3D =A35.48
Obviously this only worked because hers was a desktop machine to which I'd added a PCI slot wireless card, you'd have problems screwing one onto a laptop! However it would probably also work if used to replace the aerial on the router itself if that is the screw in type.
If you get into buying new kit I can recommend Netgear who do a range of extended range routers. I'd try the aerial first though - it's a lot cheaper!
In fact you could be cheaper still and just try replacing the aerial with a longer piece of wire hung out of the window - it might give you enough gain to work. Wi-Fi is 2.4GHz, so ideally a half-wave dipole of 6.25cm on the end of a piece of co-axial cable should be ideal.

Can you not put a wired link in?
More robust and faster.
Pete

Tell me how much cable you need and I'll make up a lead and post it to you.

Hello Chris & Pete,
I hasten to explain that:
- it's rather difficult to change the wifi antenna on the pc. It is an
Dual-Band 2.4 =96 5.8 GHz (LAN) 802.11ab unit integrated with the pc
(Xplore iX104)
- a wireless cable connection sounds great! Very much a novelty item
with lots of potential, like "odourless perfume" :)

OK, I originally said "can you not put a wired link in instead" (to the
workshop)?

Well you can replace the aerial on the router then! Or maybe make yourself a dish and poke the aerial through to the focal point.
Pete is right about the cable: I have a 60m wired connection between house and office. It's a cat 5 ethernet cable supported by two strands of stainless steel electric fence wire hanging as a catenary.
Works a treat, giving 100BaseT. Cost about =A350 all in for cable, tool to put plugs on ends, SS wire & ties.
Ethernet cable is supposedly good for 100m, although I suspect you'd get better than that outside where there are no other cables and hence no cross-talk problems. If I were laying it underground I'd put it in that blue alkathene pipe for protection and waterproofing - about =A313 for 50m.

Hello Chris & Pete,
I agree that a cable extension is an option, at least when it comes to
making a reliable connection, but as I have a wifi/wan connectivity
already at both ends, I thought that perhaps extending the range by
say 50% would be a doodle. Alas, I am not market savvy enough to know
which product would suit the purpose.

I have the same problem at home - I can't even get wireless to work from the
office to the living room and it's not far! I've got a Netgear wireless modem
router with supposedly good range but it is hopeless. Must have big bits of
steel in the building or something. I'm either going to daisy chain another
wireless router or hard wire something and then put wireless at the end of
that...luckily we have all the expertise we need to hand!
I've often thought about it - if the ELCO subscribers ever found ourselves in a
POW camp of some sort, we'd be out in minutes and it would be beautifully
filmed and photographed at the same time. I'm often amazed at the range of
skills and knowledge that's collectively represented here. Very reassuring in
these strange times...
Jeremy

Reassuring thought indeed. Although I'm not sure what skills I'd bring to
the mix except maybe worrier-in-chief ;-)

Guys,
Excellent idea! And I could contribute by making a delicious breaded
loin of pork Polish style, served with new potatoes, stewed mushrooms
and seasonal vegetables!

Ah Jeff
You are not alone at all believe me. So dont dispear, the guys with all the info and know how need to talk to each other every now and again.
After all it must get boring for them every now and again to have to explain in slow typing just for us lot.
But they do it so well either in slow or tech typing and they still put up with the mechanically and now the techy challanged aswell.
