Problem with front cabin heater

Hello all,
My '92 HDJ80 doesn't have heat coming out of the dashboard and I don't know
where to look for after I did/observed the following:
- Manual valve (on firewall in engine compartment) is fully opened.
- Heat is coming out of rear heater full blast.
- In-dash fan is working properly
- Coolant level is good.
- In engine compartment, I unplugged the hoses going to and coming from the
front cabin heater and ran a flow of water through it => nothing came out
(rust, goo, shit, ...) and the flow ran very well, hence the heater core is
not plugged.
The Shop manual refers to a "heater relay" but I don't know what this relay
is supposed to do nor where it is located. At first I guessed it was a relay
used to regulate the heat in automatic A/C-Heater systems, but the shop
manual refers to it in its NON-automatic A/C-Heater system chapter...
Any advice/idea welcome.
I hate driving with a warm ass and cold nose (need to run the front
ventilation for defogg) :o))
Thanks on advance,
Lio

The only thing that I can suggest is an air lock, or a small amount of
dirt. I had a Range Rover once and washed out the heater matrix and it
was still bad. some months later I had to remove the unit. While it
was out I washed it and got the smallest amount of dirt out, when I
put it back it was excellent.
Regards, Clive.

Looking at the Haynes manual it seems to suggest that the rear heater is
teed off from the main heater feed somewhere inside the firewall. If
this is the case maybe your flushing water all went through the rear
heater and, if Clive is right, a more vigorous flush (perhaps in the
other direction) might shift something. But it's a pretty vague diagram,
so it may be misleading and you may indeed have flushed the front matrix
only.

The Haynes wiring diagram, which is not for the version with climate
control, shows the main "heater relay" as feeding everything including
the fan. This seems to tie in with your manual and suggests that if the
fan is working the relay is OK.
The only other thing I can suggest before you start tearing it apart is
a good search in the 80sCool archive

Sorry, probably not much help.

Are you sure the hoses you put water through are the right ones? I'm
only asking because last time I looked at those hoses the flow wasn't
how I expected till I looked a bit closer.
Best regards,
Jon.

=> Yes I did see the connecting hoses and I made sure the water I was
flushing in didn't go into the rear heater but through the front on.

=> That's some good news! thanks for the hint.
During a talk with Denis last night, he suggested looking at a possible
failed flap in the dashboard, keeping the air from going through my heater
core. I didn't find anything about this in the shop manual (Thanks again
Jon W.!) but will look again.
Thanks for your advice and suggestions folks!

=> Humm, you get me doubting now. It seemed obvious when I did it as there's
a flow direction arrow on one of the hoses and one can clearly see the hoses
going through the firewall to the front heater core and the ones going down
along the firewall to the rear heater core... I will check again.
Thanks,

Hi Lio,
Out of interest, is the actual fan working, you haven't said?

> Out of interest, is the actual fan working, you haven't said?
=> Hi Julian,
Yes, Fan is working properly at all speeds and I can choose the direction of
the flow (windshield, face, feet, ...).
Basically, I stopped having hot air comin from the dashboard one day without
knowing why, without anything else failing, without me touching or taking
apart anything...
Thanks for your interest.
Work days are too long for me to do anything on the truck at night. I will
try to look at the whole system again this week end, especially that flap
Denis talked about (possibly keep the air from going through the heater
core), and will give you an update nexe week.
In the mean time, keep the questions and suggestions coming!
Cheers,
Lio

I had a similar problem when I bought my Truck....The problem was the
water diverter valve on the fire wall inside the engine bay.
=> Hi Tiaan,
Thanks for the suggestion but I already checked that valve and it's working
properly as the rear heater blow hot air in demand.
