Had my first ever play with some metaly stuff today. Had good fun, really enjoyed working with it but could do with a few more metal orientated tool now.

Any how, My brother managed to get hold of some box section from work, Nice chunky stuff 60x30x5mm wall in nice big 3m lengths. So it was decided that some sliders were in order for Dirty Gal. There are a few photo's below of the build up but can't really think of much to put up as a write up as the pics are pretty self explanatory.

After welding the first one up (First ever attempt at welding) I took it round to an engineer friend of mine whom commented that the welds were spot on. So that's a big positive for me, Not entirely pretty but good and strong and seeing as though I intend to grind them back flat anyway I'm Happy.

Pics so far, hopefully get it finished tomorrow.

Look like my ones :)

Good work, the hardest bit is making the chassis legs/brackets though :(

Cheers Andy

The idea is to weld some 5mm plate to the chassis with the leg welded to that and then notched around the slider. Should be strong enough for what I put her through and also for jacking up.

Looks good Chris , can i recommend finishing them with a coat of Isoflex . It's a rubber roofing solution just score the metal with some harsh emery cloth and paint it on . This stuff doesn't actually dry it reacts to damp and solidifies . So paint it on thin then leave outside overnight to let it set . I gave my steps 2 coats about 6 months ago and it still looks perfect despite my using the step to get in the truck every single time .

Get it in B&Q

All finished and glued up now. I think they are looking pretty smart. Finished them off in a couple of coats of hammersh1te as thats what was in the shed and time is running out for one of my other 4x4 clubs annual jamboree. Not sure weather to have them just galved or powder coated or what yet, then again the Hammerite doesn't look too bad lets see how long it lasts. lol

Anyway I know you all want pics sooooooooooooooooo.

One of my welds. This is the first time I have used a welder and the pice is of the last weld I did on this project (Didn't want any of you to see my earlier attempts.)

Just need to sort that winch mount out now. need to figure if I can somehow mount it above the chassis rail rather than below for much better approach angle. With a bit of luck Gary will be along to offer his insight being as he made it.

looking good! will help to protect those sills and lower doors

i found hammerite didn't survive the first winter up here
so i took the sliders off and to a local powdercoaters for grit blasting and powdercoating.
the powdercoating still looking good, apart from where a few rocks have gouged the coating

taken my sliders off for the summer alps and morocco trips
to save on weight,

Chris will be along to say you need to add some strengthening gussets to the outriggers to the chassis

poor dirty girl has a few battle scars

Thanks Andy, Triangle gussets at the chassis rail on the top of the bracket.:think: Figured they would be overkill on the bottom as well as the most weight they will bear is my slim 17 stone frame.
