Romania 2015

i think the further away you are from the ferry u might have to allow more time to do the trip

Also its up to you to decide how long you take to get there

Yes but it's 6 hours on decent roads. I was staggered at how good the roads were in France during the Summer and how easy they were to cover miles. I regularly drive up to Stirling and out to Stranraer in a Cruiser. That takes me about 6 hours and it's only circa 300 miles. If it was all motorway it would be just over 4 at 70 mph. I have 26 miles of 50 limit to contend with and that ony to get me North of Sheffield. That's when you can actually DO 50 of course. I'd have to toss a coin between coming down small hours and straight across the pond come sunrise or come down afternoon before and sleep over. FF does seem like quite a push though but do-able. We might have to sing a few verses of the wheels on the bus ....

I don't care what time we do the crossing i will probably sleep in Dover the night before anyway , I'm just looking for something that suits everyone and can be easily agreed so at least we are all planning with the same goal in sight for day one .

You leave home at 6am ratrace so what time the same day would be ideal for you to set up camp ?

on my own
fri evening trip to Surrey then sat crossing

2 drivers
4.00am start you should be ok for about 9.00am ferry

not set time for me but would like to be at the camp sites no late than 6.00pm as i will need a beer and food

Sounds good. Well not sure about the food. It'll be light til fairly late so would be rude not to enjoy the evening. I'll have my new RTT on so setting up will be seconds. Daughter sets her own tent up. Or she won't get a beer!

well week days i am in bed by 9.00pm up at 3.00am to start driving at 4.00am

so early start for me is normal

But off sick at this time so a few late nights

What's this? Are you telling me there are TWO 3 O'clocks? Never heard of this other one you speak of. Sounds hideous.

Tbh sounds more like a cannonball run than a road trip to me the Romanian Helen works with was shocked it could take anyone more than 3 days to drive there .

my mate says 48 hours max but need one day to recover

sod that i am in no rush

Me neither. Just the first bit I'm wrestling with. Very happy to have famly coming along, but I do move faster on my own.

Takes me around 9 hours to get to the Isle of Man i do it all the time and its about as much fun as visiting the dentist . Sounds to me like you want to cover 8 or 900 miles on day one ?

Might be tricky that. Seeing as Calais to Frankfurt is only 370 miles. We'd have to got there and back. Two and a half times.

Thats what i'm trying to clarify is ratrace intent on 12 hours traveling (from home) or does he just want to be in Frankfurt drinking beer at 6pm ?

Quote ratrace "i only said Frankfurt because it allows 475 miles approx from London

Frankfurt to Vienna 444 miles

Vienna to Arad Romania 315 miles

Arad to Comarnic 300 miles"

But he only lives in Tilbury. 08.20 crossing to France, whereafter it's only 370 miles. What he does to get to the channel is his business. Getting up at 06.00 means there is time for him to have a scratch, have brekkie, get there, have second breakfast and have another scratch then get on the train. If you could drive under the sea it's still only 475 miles from his house to Frankfurt. Not 900. Soo yes, getting up at 06.00 and not arriving til 18.00 would be 12 hours but that isn't what he said. He said he didn't want to get to the camp site any later than 18.00. Once off the train, you could drive that in just over 5 hours. Say you clear at the other end by 09.00 you could be having a beer by 15.00 That would be a dash. I'd rather do it steady take the extra time and get there at 18.00. But if I am in a hotel in the UK near Folkstone. I only need to get up about 07.30. Mmmn lovely. Get there too early and all you will be doing is hanging around waiting to go to bed I guess.

Either way it's not 900 miles on day one.

Right that sounds much better i just couldn't figure the early start for a 6 hour drive , cheers .

i will have a nice break at Calais to have bacon roll and a nice cup of tea

On the way more breaks, tea and a wee's

i might see sometning i would like to look at

i am in no rush, but this time i want to get there and see the area again

Of course if a few you want to do miles then go ahead

as i said early the further away u are the more time u need to do the trip

When we did the Alps a few years ago we all arrange to meet at the ferry or at the campsite near Lyon and that was 570 miles in a day

Yeah i was just tired ratrace and looking at it all wrong because i was working it backwards which is what i do when i have to catch the Isle of Man ferry . I'm usually pedal to the metal but on this occasion Landrover pace suits me coz i'd hope to feel i've been there rather than just driven through there if you get what i mean .

If you live within striking distance of Dover then making it there for an early crossing is feasible, if not then commiting the first day to getting out of UK and spending the night in northern France makes sense. The +1hr difference on top of the time spent crossing the channel dents the early start some what.

The choice between train or ferry is a personal one, based on whether you treat it as an opportunity for a break on board the ferry, or if you just want to get it out of the way as quick as possible on the train. Plus cost and availability come into the equation as well.

I have done Essex to Bad Kissingen in Germany (a little east of Frankfurt) twice, including the channel crossing (train) but ignoring the time difference, the shortest time was 11.5hrs, the longest was 13.5hrs. This is a long day and was only done to get from point A to point B, the next day was not spent in the saddle. It is not best practise to cover these distances day after day, after all you are on holiday! The journey is all part of the adventure, and the holiday starts as soon as you leave the driveway.

An early start from an overnight stop in northern France will stand you in a good position to cover ground on your first day as group, (there are some nice campsites perfectly suited for this). Try and keep your daily mileages attanable, factor in a break every 2hrs, its amazing how refreashed you can feel after a 15min break or 20mins sleep. You should also factor in a couple of rest days during the duration of the trip, otherwise gradual exhaustion can set in, and you risk returning from the trip needing a holiday to recover!

The trucks will also appreciate a rest now and then, as don't forget many of them will be fully loaded and working hard in the conditions of a European summer, especially when at altitude. When pushed to the limit is when the trucks can start to show up an issue which would go undetected for years during normal use.

If long days are planned and no wriggle room given in the schedule, any little delay that crops up could see you arriving at camp under the cover of darkness, or constantly chasing the schedule for the duration of the trip.

You guys are right to be disscussing and planning this now, so that you have a smooth and enjoyable trip.

Enjoy!
