Salisbury Plain, overlanding and future events

Hi All,
Thanks again to all those that managed to make it down to Salisbury
yesterday, it was a great turn out and whether you were hardened green
laners or travel weary overlanders it certainly looked like you all
enjoyed yourself.
My overriding impression of the day was that there just wasn't enough
time for people to mix properly or check out each others' vehicles.
It is evident that most of you that came were intersted in overlanding
and I counted at least six in the group who have done the UK to South
Africa run (some more than once) and on the other hand we had five to
six of you interested in doing the trip.
It just goes to show that there is a lot of knowledge and experience
that can be exchanged between us all.
I'll certainly try to organise another Salisbury trip in the spring.
Next summer I will also try to organise a weekend event at an off road
centre where people can either come for just one off the days or come
and camp for the whole weekend. It should give us a lot more time to
socialise and the chance to do more things like a hog roast (or nut
roast for the vegies) on the Saturday night.
A weekend event will also give us more time to learn more about each
others travels, vehicles, etc as well as put on side shows like driver
training for beginners, workshops, etc.
Ideally I would like to attract at least 50 TLCs for it.
Ambitious plans, but certainly doable. If any of you have any
ideas/suggestions on the subject, please hit me off list. The first
thing is to find a suitable venue.

Peter,
Craig Vincent lives in Christchurch New Zealand, I beleive he is a civil engineer by profession. One of his interests is tribology - oils & lubrication - with respect to diesel engines. He is an occasional poster on this site but is more regularly found on the lcool site. See http://www.a1.nl/phomepag/markerink/80bigend_oil-analysis-scam.htm
Allamericanimports - just seperate the words - enter on Google - and you are there. However all you get is a phone number, so to save you - +31 (0)416 540167.
Drawer material - sorry no idea.
Regards Gareth Jones.

Hi Peter,
Eddie is no longer on the list, but you should get some ideas from him
on what you can do to the vehicle.
There is a stack of people here who have been overlanding and most have
kitted out their vehicles themselves so have done all the research
already, so just fire your specific questions to the list.
We have covered some subjects already and over time I'll put together a
FAQ on the website.
Dana isn't on the list, but Craig Vincent from NZ has done a lot of
work on tweaking and modifying 80 series engines - if you want any
specific info drop a message to the list here, several of us are up to
speed on what he is doing and can advise.
They are referring to http://www.all-american.nl - Marteen is the man
to talk to there.
The composites are honeycombed plastic of various shapes and sizes and
yes, they should be fine for making drawer systems. It is more
expensive than marine ply, but the weight savings far outweigh the
cost. Richard is using them for the sides of horse boxes and I think
even the floors, it's pretty tough stuff.
One difficulty is getting hold of the stuff - I have been toying with
talking to Richard about putting together a few design options for him
to put together between horse boxes - if you are ever over this way we
can go through it.
Put together emails on each specific topic and fire it off to the list,
that is what we are here for.

Sounds mighty interesting to me as well Julian. If you can get a name
Ray might be able to track down suppliers, he's good at that kind of
thing being in the building trade.
Best regards,
Jon.
