Hi All,
Just a quick message to wish you a Happy Christmas and Merry New Year.
It took me a while to get round to getting the list up, but it seems to
be working well and hope that you are enjoying it.
We seem to be getting a very good broad range of discussions going from
very technical stuff to some very basic topics, but I hope that you are
all benefitting from it, I certainly am.
I am flat out with a contract which has been slowing down the
development of the site, the archives, etc, but hopefully by the end of
Jan things should start to move again.
Lets hope that 2005 will be good year for us all.

I'm going to spend some time in the Canary Isles this year WITH the
Beast and spend some time on the university circuit in Germany giving
seminars on my rock art research.
I know this is a kinda off-list topic, but are there anybody who'd be
interested in joining me for a stint in the Canary Isles? (Canary Isles
[20th to 28/29th give or take a couple of days here and there] - papers
and for the sheer adventure of it! ) and/or Germany? (Germany - anytime
this year, and conference at Ingolstadt, 40km north of Muenchen).
I'd sure appreciate it for once, not to spend my entire life seemingly
travelling alone on the European Continent and further afield.

Hi All,
I would just like to take the opportunity to wish you all a Happy
Christmas and Merry New Year.
It's been an entertaining year on the list with a lot of new members
and a great time had by all down on Salisbury Plain.
I have already started planning another day out on Salisbury for the
spring and am beavering away at some new software for hosting a new
site and ultimately a web interface for the list and some archives.
Have a great time.

Julian, thanks for all your efforts over the year.
All the best for a bigger and better 2006.
Try and take a rest - although with 3 little ones that is probably asking too much!
Seasons greetings one and all.

Hi Reno,
I have a lot of plans for the site and the list, but the timing of delivery is mainly down to how much time I can afford to
assign to it.
I have already written over half the code for it, but am in the process of completely rewriting the underlying Content
Management System (CMS) and launching a new business around it so I need to get that sorted before doing the rest. I have about
a dozen sites to go onto the CMS in the first weeks of January when we launch and will then move the LC site onto it and start
to do more.
The new system will eventually provide the following:
The list will be split up into a number of smaller lists covering specific subjects relating to different models and useage.
You will be able to post to the list either via email as now, or via a web interface.
You will be able to receive posts to the list via email as now, or go and view them on the website as with web forums.
All messages on the email side will automatically be cleaned up to being text only.
For those using company email, you will be able to have corporate disclaimers stripped out automatically.
You will need to register to use the list providing details of vehicle and location which will help when people answer your
questions.
All posts to the list since it started 18months ago will be available on the web for searching.
You will be able to attach files to the posts to the list, which will be automatically stored on the website with links to them
being put in your posts, although there may be some initial restrictions and number/size of files.
All messages will be threaded properly and code will be put in place to prevent thread hijacking.
Any technical questions I answer (like the latest thread on diff locks) will be posted to a technical library, rather than the
list to provide a detailed public FAQ section. I will also edit and re-publish other peoples technical responses in the same
way (assuming permission to do so).
I am also toying with providing archives for about 10 other lists that I subscribe to - some are already available at
birfield.com, but the hope would be to provide more detailed and intelligent searches.
Also on the website we are aiming for:
A technical dictionary for providing descriptions of the various acronyms used like CDL (Centre Diff Lock), etc.
A database of all models of Landcruiser so you can establish the exact model number you have (e.g. HDJ80, KZJ70, etc)
A Database of product manufacturers for everything from winches, suspension, lights, etc.
A database of suppliers of the above. They will be provided with a facility so that they can keep their profiles up to date.
By registering you should be able to pull up lists of manufacturers and suppliers that supply kit for your model - all searches
should automatically be tailoured for your particular model.
It is a hell of a lot to do, but I think the hard work will be worth it. I have been using the internet since the early
nineties (before it was known as the web) and have gained a hell of a lot from it. This is my chance to give something back.

Hi,
Just a quick note to wish you all a Merry Christmas and prosperous new
year.
I must appologise for being a little slow off the mark trying to
organise trips this year, work has been a little frantic.
I have just rolled out the first version of some new web forums
software that we have developed which I am aiming to move the list over
to in the new year.
This means that whilst you will be able to continue to email messages
to the list as you can now, you will also be able to view and reply to
the messages via a web interface.
I'll be loading up all the messages from the start of the list so there
should be some good searchable archives to help with your research.
All being well I'll be looking for some testers in early January to
check that it all works before rolling it out to you all.
Other news is that I'll be organising another trip to Salisbury plain
in the new year to help us all blow away the winter cobwebs before I
have to knuckle down to get another LC and then prep it for a family
trip around Morocco in April - there is a lot to consider when prepping
an LC for a family trip, particularly with three daughters ranging from
15months up to 6.5 - should be fun.
Well that's enough from me - enjoy the break.

MERRY CHRISTMAS all,
I'm still here and still trying to catch-up with all your emails-glad to see
the list is doing well.
It has been something of an exhausting year and the next six months look set
to be the same! 'Hopefully I can contribute again after that.
The Cruiser is well and well used, although requiring a bit of TLC, a broken
front spring (not that I noticed until I actually was looking underneath!)
amongst other things.
I have had the Webasto for over a year and it has been flawless.
All the best for 2007, keep it sunny side up!
Best Regards
Dermot Allen
