Hi everyone/anyone
Any suggestions for and independent Landcruise Amazon garage in E Anglia, the nearer to Bury St Edmunds the better.
Looking for someone competent to do a major service.
Any suggestions welcomed

Hi Ken,
I've not heard of any, although Footloose 4x4 who I think are near
Peterborough work on LCs for overlanding trips and know their way
around the vehicle.
What sort of things need doing? DO you have an 80 or 100 series?
You should be fine with a local garage as long as you specify what you
want changing e.g. oil, oil filter, air filter, etc. If you need a
list of oil specs etc and what needs to go where I could draw something
up for you.

Subject: Re: [ELCO] Servicing in East Anglia ?
Thanks Julian
It's a 2002 Amazon 4.2 Auto on air
Will check out Footloose. In any case, they could be a useful contact .
I'm joining an off road trip to the Russian arctic and then a trip to
central asia next spring and summer. Was debating whether to take my 2002
Amazon (auto box and air suspension) or buy an older more basic version
(1996 -99 ?). Either way Footloose could be useful in getting the vehicle
prepped.
Re: servicing. I do the routine oil engine oil/filter changes, brake pads,
etc. Thanks for the offer of more info on oils etc, but I have all that
basic stuff.
If you look at the "B" service requirements in the owners handbook then its
saying you need to do every 27,000 miles things such as:
Check Valve clearances
Change diff oil
Change transmission and transfer box oil
etc
Not sure that a ny old local "non-dealer garage is up to that ??
Regards
Ken

Hi Ken,
If you do the routine stuff yourself, you should be able to to do the B
service stuff yourself.
All the fluid side of things is pretty straight forwardn - the thing to
remember with the auto gearbox is to drain off as much as you can and
then top it up with exactly the same amount - you will never be able to
drain it all hence you only put back in what you can get out.
The valves on the 1HD-FTE engine are pretty straight forward - a
workshop manual would be handy - you can pick them up from the dealers
on CD or printed manuals - the printed versions are a lot more
expensive.
I always recommend trying to adhere to the factory recommended service
intervals, although for most they tend to skip things like valves,
sticking to just fluid and filter changes.
Also factor in stripping down and regreasing the wheel bearings and CV
joints every 20-30,000 miles - dealers tend not to touch these until
they go wrong - some simple maintenance can help them last a lot
longer.
Also for the pads side of things, just replace as and when required.
As for overlanding in the 100, it is a very capable machine - yes it
does have some electronics but these are general very reliable -
certainly more so than the LR electronics. When I have some more time
I'll be replacing my '94 80 series for a 100 for overlanding trips
which I'll prep myself - it's basically bigger (I travel with the
family) and also a much more comfortable ride on the rougher roads.
OK, with the independent front suspension you don't have the
articulation of a solid axled 80, however if you are doing a big trip
and encounter terrain where you really do need that extra bit of
articulation, I would be more inclined to turn around and find another
route.
I would concerned over the active suspension - it can be a bit tiresome
and if you are planning on doing plenty of off roading - I would swap
that out for an upgraded setup. There are a lot of options for
upgrading the suspension with a lot of good work being done in the US
and Aus - if you want details give me a call.
There are also concerns with the front diff - depending on the version
you have they are considered to be weak - however if you fit an ARB air
locker to the front it strengthens things quite well and you avoid the
problems.

Many thanks Julian
Very informative and very helpful.
I know I can do it myself - it's just that after 35 years of crawling under
cars in the half light you reach a point that you don't mind paying someone
else (but not a ?1500 point !..... and only if they can be relied upon to do
the job as it should be done)
Over the next couple of months I've got to decide whether I'm going to take
the existing 100 on these extended trips or buy an 80.
I'm inclined towards a reliable 80 so will probably put a "wanted" mail out
on this board in a month or so
Either way, some prep work will be required so I'll contact you again once
I've made the above decision
B Rgds
Ken
