I've been quoted £700 for a standard service from the Toyota dudes on the Seven Sisters Road. Is it ALWAYS advisable to go to Toyota for a service or better (as well as cheaper) to go to a third party service centre, using Toyota bits and pieces? What say you all?

If you are near them go to either Julian V or Greg, :ugeek: it will get done at the best price :thumbup: AND will be done properly :thumbup: which you can't always be sure of at Toyo. :think:
 
Tough choice, get robbed blind by a main dealer who hasn't got a clue what to do without looking in his book or take it to a specialist :think: :mrgreen:

You are wise beyond your years. I've just checked out Julian's website. It's going to be at least a 250 mile round trip. This begs the question. What exactly is the service intervals for a 100 series because I don't want to be doing this journey every week. LOL!

I don't know what the service intervals are TBH I make mine up as I go along :) does it say anything about them in your owner or service books?

closer to 300 for me and certainly worthwhile.

he could help you baseline service the truck.

and probably advise you / let you help as you go through things.
- thats what i did -

if you are so inclined you could handle much of the servicing yourself. or just some of it. might be worth a trip and a chat with him.

Ditto what Adrian said, my round trip is about 290 miles, but it's worth it for my peace of mind that things will be done correctly, I had a very bad experience with a local mechanic, who fitted a new CV and didn't put any grease in, discovered by Julian to be rusty inside :o when he was prepping my truck for a trip to Croatia.
He will encourage you to do things yourself and explain how to do it, reasonable charges too, my bills never seem to be as much as I anticipated :thumbup:
 
Yes Greg is closer, 80 mile round trip, I do go to him as well, but I like the long drive to Julian's and to spread my jobs around.
I would hate for either of them to go out of business through lack of custom, but there's probably not much chance of that happening, I mean to say, Cruisers are always breaking down aren't they :lol: :lol:

I work on the following service intervals.

Change the oil, oil filter and air filter every 5000 miles.
Grease the grease points every year.
Check the brakes when I change the oil and change the pads when they are down to a quarter
Lube the door locks before winter sets in.
Get the injectors refurbed if the engine runs rough or after 150K miles.
Put 1 bottle of redex diesel in the fuel every 10th fill.
re-grease the wheel bearings every 20k miles.

Everything else gets done when it needs it.

You will find that most garages do a Mini service when they say they are doing a full one. Oil and oil filter are most important (as well as making sure that you have brakes), everything else tends to be nice to haves and is not likely to kill you or ruin the car. Remember the engine is the most expensive part so make sure that has nice clean oil and it will look after your wallet.
 
Yo Greg in Burgess Hill is much closer. In fact I might pay him a visit on my way to Worthing for a days body boarding with truck full of kids. My truck hasn't been (offically) serviced for at least three years so I think the time is due. Alas not before it's been LPG converted. I'm going to give Greg a bell for some quick advice anyway, as my LPG man is willing a do a routine service at the same time as the conversion. Last Saturday I had a chance meeting with a family in Hendon that own and run BOTH a 100 and 200 series Land Cruisers (Their third car is a Lexus). The entire family (three generations) wouldn't say a single bad word against Jemca Toyota the people who services their cars. Maybe it's a London thing? The truck here are so pampered that they NEVER see mud.

According to Toyota, the service intervals for a 100 series are 12 months/every 10,000 for a "intermediate" service (oil & filter change) or every 24 month/20,000 for a full service. I was quoted £290 (inclusive of parts, labour and VAT) by the dudes at Jemca on the Seven Sisters Road, today and I have to admit it, (for London) I was happily surprised. Mind you, they are not changing ALL the fluids, only the engine oil, which is a shame.

Andy, can you elaborate on the air filter service. It seems excessive. Doesn't the "book" say something like "Inspect every 20 k, wash every 40 k"? You do have the washable cyclone filter with a dust trap?

For the grease points, it is better with frequent service, particularly in wet or dusty conditions. I believe it is more important to grease every 5k than to change oil every 5k.

Oil change intervals are probably different between the diesel, which is quite hard on its oil, and the petrol which is very easy on its oil.
 
Yep it is excessive but for the price of an air filter it saves forgetting it. It's kind of historic, when I used to work in a garage in the 70s, you changed air filters every time you changed oil filters - whatever the vehicle.

Yep and on the grease points you are correct, depends on your use of the vehicle, mine gets road use all the time and has only ever been off road once so the grease is pretty clean - I have had the CVs apart twice in the last year.
