The Story of Snow White - LC80 Build Thread..!

@Bat21 - Well, whilst working on Snow White my homemade bread was being made in the bread machine - does that count?? :icon-wink:

@Clivehorridge - Will try to keep up, however made some basic mistakes like not saving word document with next installement on and found this morning my computer automatically updated last night so lost everything..:icon-surprised::icon-redface::icon-cry:.! I think I will get plenty of practice to improve my screwing art on this project..:eusa-whistle:!

Hi Caron, that's so annoying and utterly frustrating. It used to happen to me a lot in work until I changed to a new laptop which is set to periodically auto save docs.

It's too late for you on this occasion, but if you go into word settings, you should find an auto save option that will, as selected by you, auto save docs every 5 mins or so to save this from happening again.

Have you tried searching in recent docs or other such searches? Normally updates don't affect docs, just the operating system, you may also find something by opening word and clicking 'open file' where usually the most recent word docs worked on would be listed top down, latest at the top.

Maybe this is all standard stuff to you and I should shut up, but it's worth a look-see.

On the word doc theme, let me know your platform, XP, windows Vista, widows 7 or dare I say widows 8 (ouch!) and the MS Office word version you're using (I'm on 2013 now but older versions have similar options) and I can get my company IT to give you some clearly written advice, if that's any help.

Great thread Caron.

Looking forward to more updates.

Thanks Ben, your post is so inspiring..!
Only if you managed to get it to rise properly
– Next time I will take a picture for you to judge.

Thanks Clive, tried and failed to find anything, never mind, thankfully it wasn’t a chapter in war and peace – yet..! Aren’t Platforms also a type of shoes us girlies wear...:laughing-rolling:! All jokes aside – Platforms Windows XP and Office 2007 but I’ve been told we are looking at moving to Windows 7 or 8, no decisions yet.

... IMHO choose 7 with 2013 office.

I'll try to get you some advice. I've lost a whole days' work before now, has been up to 100 pages of legal/technical report, which is devastating to reproduce after losing it. I'm crap at IT...:shifty:

With a spring in my step and eager to cross off the next thing on my list, it was time to try and find out what was causing the wet doggy smell (no offence to dogs, dog owners or any other doggy related things).

The carpet on the driver’s side was damp to the touch, when I pulled it back; I found half a tonne of mud and a puddle of water :icon-sad:. This was promptly removed :chores-mop:

p1491651726-5.jpg

To clean up the carpet, the mess underneath and let it dry out :icon-idea: we decided to remove the carpet. But to do this, imagine my shock when I found that the centre console and the front seats needed to come out...! :icon-eek:

The centre console was easy but it made Snow White looked vulnerable..!

p1491630120-5.jpg

p1491688346-5.jpg

p1491668346-5.jpg

Armed with my new best friend in hand, "socket set" I proceeded to undo the very stiff bolts of the driver’s seat :banana-wrench:. All I can say is thank heavens for fish oil – sorry WD40..!
p1491646768-5.jpg

p1491649770-5.jpg

Next the passenger’s seat...going, going, gone..!

p1491630110-5.jpg

Musical chairs anyone?

p1491646734-5.jpg

Next rear passenger seat – spot the can of fish oil..!
p1491666270-5.jpg

Now she looks naked and bare ...!

p1491665956-5.jpg

p1491652096-5.jpg

Pulling back the carpet, the underlay was rotten and soggy :icon-evil:

p1491659872-5.jpg

Ooohhh, so excited I found the missing screw from the steering column along with 2 x 5ps . Perhaps Snow White will start to earn her keep.

p1491657584-5.jpg

p1491657482-5.jpg

More money - Kerching..!
p1491664340-5.jpg

Now I find another chip - plus a plastic fork...! Glad I made the decision to remove the carpets and clean her up.

p1491653686-5.jpg

Stripped away but not cleaned yet..!

p1491656806-5.jpg

p1491654518-5.jpg

and so the rebuild story continues....!

That's why you MUST save any newly created documents or changes to existing documents or files and, if it's really important, preferably save a copy on a seperate storage media like a pendrive etc. Even if your hard drive is partitioned, saving a copy on the non-OS partition isn't foolproof 'cos if the harddrive suffers mechanical faliure you'll still loose it. When you open a document it's loaded into RAM memory which is cleared everytime the PC reboots. Any changes you make are not saved to the root file until you manually 'save' them so if your PC reboots, (which it can do when it runs updates) with the changes still held only in RAM, they're gone.

Good work Caron. It's the best way with a new car, get it bottomed right from the start. Once you start getting comfy with it, you'll never really go back. I've never liked other people's dirt. Are you going to put new underlay in there? I know that Lord Lomas has something that he puts in as a replacement soundproofing.

Chris

Brave girl Caron, you're doing what I should have done when I got mine. Still haven't done that after 7 years of ownership! Soggy underlay is standard I think, you'd be very lucky to have a 100% dry 80. Now you make me feel guilty especially as it's a beautiful sunny dry day today...

Looks like you've been busy, the most my missus can do when something needs doing with the car is ignore it and wait for me to notice it lol.

It's gonna be a nice clean motor when your done in there. Contemplated taking seats out of mine to give the carpets a really good clean.

Nothing better than bicarbonate of soda (baking powder) to get rid of the of the smell , wash your carpet down then just sprinkle it everywhere , let it dry and vacuum it up . 3% hydrogen peroxide is bleach that smells fresher than fresh air (if thats possible?) and believe it or not you can mix the 2 together and use it as a mouthwash if you want so shouldn't harm anything . My Mrs has been a professional cleaner for 30 years .

Fair play to you.... well done for getting stuck in
Hey Caron, I think I have just spotted where I can mount my new ARB CKMTA12 air compressor

I have disconnected the water pipes to the rear heater so it is just sitting there taking up space. To save me tearing my seat out, can you let me know how wide (L to R) how deep (front to back) and high that rear heater unit is please?

I have my main fuse under there. I took the heater out and used the hole entry to get my cables up to the split charger. It's a nice big space.

Chris

Shayne - nice tip on the bi carb. I'll give that a go.

Thanks Towpac!

Caron, try this on your PC. Open any word document and go to "File" Select "Options" and "Save" you should then see a window open with all sorts of choices (damn, for some reason I can't post pics from my laptop :wtf:).

select "autosave" 10 mins or whatever you choose and check the box for auto save file if closed without saving.

See how that works!

I thought that sounds good I'll try that, but when I went there all that you have said was already selected :confusion-confused: but it isn't something I've done, would it be a default setting?

Probably. If those options are set, in theory, any document that you create annot be lost, even if you shut down without saving. The problem normally comes when trying to find it if you didn't save it with a specific name. Word normally default saves files with the first words in the text. Letters for example often get saved with names like "Dear Sir ..." or such like.

Most of this is theoretical and it doesn't stop accidents, but it really helps to reduce "lost" files and hours of work... sometimes.

I still think Caron's lost work is there somewhere...

So the story of Snow White continues – I have been busy working on her but a very slow on updating this thread, sorry everyone, smack on the hand needed..:eusa-naughty:!

Next step was tackling the rust spots on and around Snow White with some rust convertor. This work is in preparation for her going into the body shop for some serious rust removal..! This was the rust around the tailgate area

p1504267030-5.jpg

And a photo to prove it is me doing the work (though closely supervised by Marius of course:icon-rolleyes:)

After cleaning the tailgate rubber thoroughly and finding half a tonne of mud and dirt in there, I had to replace the rubber so she would stay watertight.

My impression of a Smurf :character-smurfguy:as it was freezing outside . Marius kept creeping up on me to take photos of me actually working

p1504166272-5.jpg

The tow bar fixture and rear bumper fixture was removed

p1504166310-5.jpg

p1504171096-5.jpg

Now Snow White looks naked and her rear does look big in this photo..!

Another job to add to the list “To Do List” which is ever increasing – broken rear sliding window rubber..!

p1504186114-5.jpg

So I found myself in Halfords, getting excited with all the socket sets and spanners on display – this used to be a place that I would definitely avoid; now I was like a kid in a sweet shop..! However, disaster struck...! I came across this section and nearly fainted . These are NOT what I will be having in Snow White, or any furry dice..... This would be my ultimate nightmare..!:angry-cussing:

Isn't that what clouds are all about?

We managed to sneak a "Powered by Fairydust" sticker onto a friend's Discovery. Paranoia set in when we pointed out that where there was one, there could be more.

My four and a half year old daughter has blessed my dashboard with "smileys" which I'm tolerating for the moment. They will gradually diminish till there's none left.

Anyway, she has me wrapped around her finger and can get away with almost anything, what the heck!
