Hi There guys
I would like to know if the front tow hooks are strong enough to use for off
road and if not where would I get some strong ones. I think that the tow bar
on the back is strong enough ,so dont need ant there.

Hi John,
Yes, they should be fine.

I don't know what the official opinion of Toyota would be but mine have
had plenty of big pulls on them ... Just hope they're not buried under
the muck when you need to use them, or put a strop on first.
Towballs are a very poor recovery point IMHO, the ball is liable to snap
off or the bar to bend, they're not designed for the kinds of loads you
can easily end up putting on them for recovery of/with a heavy TLC 80.
I'm not sure what your other options are for a standard 80 though ...
The Scorpion recovery loops are very good (expensive) but designed for a
Landrover so you'd have to drill your rear cross member to use those. I
have then on the front of mine (reinforced winch bumper) and a NATO
hitch on the back but will fit Scorpion on the back as well when I
remember.
Best Regards,
Jon.

Sorry, no they're not.
They're OK for a quick tow on the road but nowhere near strong enough
for a recovery pull in an off-road situation, say when stuck in a mud
hole. You will need good recovery points rated to at least six tonnes
SWL, preferably more.

Hi John,
www.scorpionracing.co.uk , 4x4 section, Products, Recovery Towing,
Recovery Eyes, Rear Recovery Eyes.
The mounting holes don't align with the 4 holes in the rear cross member
of an 80. My personal preference is to use a pair of them, one either
side close to the chassis rail with a big spreader plate behind. Then
use a strop with each end attached to one of these to make a bridle and
you have a pretty good recovery point IMHO.
Best regards,
Jon.

They also have a combination ball/pintle towing & recovery attachment
similar to mine. It's not featured on their website though, (at least
I coudn't find it under the Recovery label)

Hi Peter,
What problems have you heard of?
I know traditionally you wouldn't use them on other cars, but LC ones
are pretty solid and I am yet to hear of them fail.
I would have thought they would be perfectly adequate for what John is
doing.

Hi Guys
Just thought I would up date you on the issue of the tow hooks on the front
of the cruiser.
I brought the pig tails(tow hooks) to this guy who works with metal etc.
After looking at them for a while he thought I was mad to suggest they were
only for being down the cruiser on board the ship.
He said they were very strong both in metal used and the design used.
He will add extra weld all around the round bar I think just to shut me up.
So I suppose time will tell then if they are good enough to drag the cruiser
out if need be.
He told me a story of a 4x4 stuck and getting pulled out by a tractor with
the rope tied around the wise bones at the front of what ever it was.
The result was the 4x4 was pulled out all right but the damage inflected on
its under body bits was severe.
So I wont be doing that.
