UK GX questions

thanks julian
apart from suspension and tyre woes my main bugbear is electrikery: i've had
immobilisers and windows go tits up in the bush (mainly due to wear, tear or
dust) and so i am looking for manual windows, that sort of thing. are the uk
gxs twin battery? - 12 or 24v?
if you prefer manuals, your best option is to go for a 1995-1998 uk model gx
- this has some of the electronic luxury extras that the vx has, but is more
basic trim - also being a more utilitarian gx the prices tend to be lower.

Hi Jeremy,
OK, as far as I know you will struggle to get manual windows on any of the UK
or Jap model 80 for any years - you need to go for the poverty pack version as
sold to the UN, etc - 'Bosnia' Jon has one - the other down side is you get
the 1HZ engine, not the turboed 1HD-T or 1HD-FT.
The poverty pack model will have to be imported, most likely from the
continent - you may be able to find one in Japan and I have contacts that can
help, but it will be expensive.
All the UK 80 series diesels (and I think the Jap imports) use twin batteries
- they run 12volts in the car, but join the two batteries for starting.

i bought my 80 3 years ago - it's an import, with all the diff locks, auto, 4.2
td obviously, a/c, leccy windows and sunroof etc. after quite a few months of
searching, i found it via the autotrader website at a slightly strange used car
dealership in thetford, norfolk. it's a good car, been good for us and if all
goes according to plan it will be good for many more thousands of ks.
i was born and spent my first 20 years in kenya - we farmed in the solai valley
(not our own farm sadly) and lived in karen. not been back since but made many
trips to zanzibar and have surprised my kids and myself as i'm stil prety
fluent in swahili.

hi guys,
lc electrics are normally quite robust. this indeed does not apply to
doors/windows.
what i have done works for me fine:
- for windows i replaced the switches in the doors with sealed relays
controlled by simple switches. the relays last forever and the
switches are disposable - they cost pennies and can be replaced in
seconds.
- i never use dielectric grease on switch contacts.
- once in a while i take apart the front door lock solenoids, clean
the old grease and put in new silicone grease. that keeps them going
for another 12 months.
as for the immo, i have one custom built using electronics and
switches sealed to ip68.
