UK unemployment hits 16 year high

He has spoken to maybe 30 local garages for work alongside his college (normal garage work, nothing glamorous), no-one is interested - if you're not already qualified they dont want you, they just arent interested in contributing to anyone's training.

Yet what do I hear 'there arent people with the qualifications' ! So how do you get them, if companies wont take you on...to put this into perspective, I have told him to offer to work for £25.00 a day, and I will pay him £25.00 to top his money up.
Pete, I applaud you and your son  And I confidently predict with an attitude like that (and with your support) he will succeed for sure
Another way of looking at it is he is going to be one of very few of his age/generation with those skills and with an aptitude for hard work. If it's that much of a battle to get his quals, then how many other people are going to get them? Very few! Scarcity of skills means he will be much in demand and have little competition for prime jobs! 6 years of slog now for a successful 40-50 year career. Yes, it's a tough lesson but it will pay off.

Well I haven't officially worked for 4 years. I did start my own business in the beginning but I put that on the back burner when it started to interfere with my daughters upbringing. I'm now 100% a house husband and my wife is the bread winner. I wouldn't dream of signing on or claiming benefits (they wouldn't give me anything anyway!). So I'm not included in those figures produced by the government and I'm sure I'm one of many thousands of people in the same situation. I would love to go back to work but I know that realistically it won't be able to until August as thats when the daughter starts Primary school.

We have been toying with the idea that if things don't improve in this country in the next few years then we may end up emigrating to NZ, Oz or Canada.

What we ultimately need in this country is a government that has a bit of foresight. If they had bailed out MG Rover or Woolworths or some of the other huge companies that were failing it would have cost them less in the long run in benefits and retraining. The leadership in this country is too busy pointing the accusatory finger at other countries, fighting battles that don't concern us, bailing out other countries economies, obeying to bullcrap that spouts from Brussels and trying to screw every last penny from the poor man on the street, it can't see the aging sytem falling apart around it. Who ultimately would pull any economy out of the doldrums? Why of course it would be the lowly working classes that they have leaned on for so many years. Without the blood, sweat and tears shed by the workers no countrys economy would survive.

Jeez I just read that back and realised I'm more a socialist than I realised!!!

compared to Canuckian, all you blokes sound the same ...

If you used an English accent whilst reading mine, that's even funnier! I'm in Scotland, but am from Zimbabwe (via South Africa) so don't sound 'English' at all - nor do quite a few of the guys here .

In fact, I don't think there is a 'definitive' English accent

/off-topic

when i worked for a cabinet shop the average wage was $15/hr and minimum was $10/hr
a gent from the old world came in with his son. he approached the owner and offered that his son would work for $8/hr and if he didn't work out then off he would go.
the kid started the next day, he worked hard, caught on fast, polite and respectful ... when i left a few months later the shop had already enrolled him in Cabinet aprenticship.
i am sure the kid would have gone far.

nobody was hiring at the time, that family played the game right and to the benefit of both the shop and the family.

win win.

My 2p worth....

My lad is 17, he is in the 2nd year at college, doing a level 3 NVQ (equiv to 3 A levels) in Motorsport Engineering, this leads on to 3 year Foundation degree. The course is full time 3 days a week, this leaves him 3 days to work and Sundays off.

He has spoken to maybe 30 local garages for work alongside his college (normal garage work, nothing glamorous), no-one is interested - if you're not already qualified they dont want you, they just arent interested in contributing to anyone's training.

He is currently working for one of my mates cleaning garden machinery two days a week, completely disheartened but accepting.

The work experience, possibly leading to a job?, only applies to those on jobseekers, my lad cant even get on a scheme where you work for free because he is trying to get a proper qualification.

F*****g s***e country.

Think we'll go to Aus. and live with Ben.

Oz is not a lot better - if you're not a pukka Ozzy you're put at the back of the long queue for work. It's nit all 'sunny skies and Chevrolet' to quote an old advert some of you will know. Clearly a sweeping statement - a lot of ifs and buts - location plays a big part, so if you're happy to not live in the bright lights of the east coast you're ok, and if you have skills that are in demand you're usually OK. And if you've enough cash to set up your own business you're ok. But if you don't fit into those groups, life can be tough.

And don't get me started on South Africa

The comment about vocational training has held true for a long time now - where did all the tax breaks for companies offering apprenticeships go? What happened to all the technical colleges and trade schools? Legislated out of existence?? Or is it easier for people to sit back, breed and let the nanny-state tax a dwindling pool of tax-payers more and more heavily to support the 'won't works' while allowing lots of companies all sorts of allowances and timing differences to pay almost 0% tax? - note the 'can't works' are excluded.

Devolution of the NHS? What a good idea - make the swines work properly and be accountable, not just cash-cows for the hangers-on! And make the stupids pay for treatment where the cause is self-inflicted through alcohol, drugs, etc. Why should I pay for others being fools??

I have a problem with people in government who do not have the skills (economic and financial) for the positions they hold. And some single-minded dolts that are clearly only interested in fleecing the system. And this is party-agnostic - it applies to them all.

As for Scottish Independence - if the Labour-living typical Scot thinks things are bad now, wait till they swap Westminster and Sterling for Brussels (or is it really Bonn??) and the decrepit Euro. That will be a big wake-up call!

My jaded tuppence (Sterling)'s worth  I'll be better after my next fix and nip ... while waiting for that nice health-visitor to bath me and that other nice lady to bring my dinner ...

you cant get into OZ to go and live there unless you have a skill in demand. :naughty:

so if you get in, finding work wont be difficult.

they change the list every year and usually add a few more skills to the list, and take a few away. if i wasnt a qualified carpenter i couldnt go and live in OZ (unless i had another in demand skill that was on the list).

you also wouldnt believe the amount of hoops ive got to jump through and the amount of expense im going to to get my visa.

had to send references from previous and current employers, all my certificates for my qualifications, i will then be invited to do a carpentry practical assessment which lasts all day. then theres english reading writing and speaking exams, medical checks, including tests for different diseases, police criminal record checks, oh and about £7000!

they only want the best people moving to there country, and i imagine by making it so difficult and expensive, it must put all the 5hit heads off going!

Hmmmmmmm now what would the EU say to such an idea? Population of 500 million + who have the legal right to go and live anywhere within the EU without any language/skill/criminal record test etc
