I'm on a ferry and my ignition lights won't go out when I pull out the key!!! My battery won't last the trip! Any ideas to the problem? I've jiggled the key and have no tools to disconnect the battery!!

If your battery does go flat the ferry staff are sure to have a jump starter to get you going again, that sort of thing probably happens frequently on board  , I'm afraid I can't help to diagnose the problem though

Pull out the ignition relay, not sure exactly where that is on a 100 but pop the bonnet locate the relay fuse box and start pulling till it goes out :) Could be that the relay itself has welded the contacts

edit - surely the wheel brace/jack handle tool roll has a couple of spanners and a double ended screwdriver in it (mine does) should be enough in there to disconnect the battery :)

Can you start the car, or is the key turning freely as if it's not 'engaged' with anything? There's a weakness in the earlier 100 series ignition barrels that means they can snap and the key turns freely but doesn't do anything ... Hope it's not that, you need to pop the barrel out and get a screw driver in there to work the ignition instead with your key nearby for the security chip to register.

Blimey    Lets hope not, as I shouldn't think he's got a slide hammer with him if he's not got a spanner to undo the battery terminal :|

Thanks a million lads! I managed to get a spanner and undid the negative. I think I have a gremlin in there somewhere! It starts no problem and runs fine, just when I pull out the key the lights stay on, not all of them seatbelt abs a/t oil and one other. This might be connected to the random vsc stability lights that came on twice a few weeks back for no reason!? I'll see what happens when I get off the ship, fingers crossed I make to Dublin !! Thanks again for the help merry Xmas to you all!

Right this has turned really nasty!! I can't drive the car now! When I let my foot off the accelerator it cuts out! I'm so feckin screwed, breakdown man on way in an hour or so. What a time for it to shit itself!

Damn thats not good news bud. Hope its a simple fix and your on your way in no time.

hmm, wonder if that is a loose engine earth cable.

Chris

Not that simple I think ,problem arose before I touched battery! This is gonna cost I think!

No not the battery earth - the engine block earth.

Chris

so it wouldn't idle before you had the episode with the ignition staying on on the ferry? How does it drive?

Thanks for the replies lads. I called breakdown recovery and he didn't do anything that I didn't do!! Switched from gas to petrol and back a few times as it wouldn't idle for him either and then after 2/3 goes it did! Went for a test drive and it was ok, didn't cut out or have any probs so hit the m/way and made it to Dublin on LPG. So the only thing it might be is the LPG needs to be calibrated as I was driving fairly hard on the way to the ferry and it maybe it didn't like it. I'm not sure but I think the ignition lights mystery might be connected to the lpg problem but I'll book it in to a brc specialist and let them sort it. I've been on petrol the last few days and it seems fine so I hope it gets me home with no drama!!Merry Xmas .

Well I'm now home and never had so much crap luck with a car!! Filled up at the garage and walking back to the car I saw drip drip drip underneath!! Coolant all over the ground, got it back to the house and started phoning garages and no one was open! Traced the leak to a split hose that the bloody steering rod had rubbed a groove into it so went to halfrauds and got repair tape and just as I finished fixing it the hose beside it split open too. I think I bought someone else's problem car. I felt like torching it this morning might still if there's so much as a new squeak!!

Thanks to all that helped I'm grateful ! It's fixed now and I'm 200 quid lighter!! It was a live supply to the injector bank and a relay that were faulty and the hoses were of crap quality! So recalibration, new filters and hopefully that's it !
