Hello all,

I am wanting to buy some commercial web space, and register a domain name, not some advert ridden free space.
Mostly to store 800x600 photos of about 120kB each.

Prices from what I see on the 'net vary quite dramatically.
Some charge a registration, some not.

I would like to start with 500 meg of storage, and be able to buy more later on as required.

I would like to register a "dot.com"

Where can the more knowledgeable point me to?

Gra.

Another good one is http://www.safenames.net/. If it is only going to be pictures then consider Smugmug who are excellent. They have a free service and a paid for service for professional services. It is geared for photographers and if you create a url you can link it directly to your smugmug account. I've done that in my signature.

Hi Simon,

I can only see the paid service.
$40

Is the free service you mention, the 14 day trial?

Gra.

That Smugmug looks very nice but i guess you have to pay for it as you say.

I see what you mean - the original service was free in basic but for $40 a year it gives quite a lot of features http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SmugMug with unlimited storage.

You would also get a "website" by default eg graham.smugmug.com so you wouldn't need to register one separately [unless you want to change the url to graham.co.uk etc].

The trouble with a lot of free sites like flickr and photobucket and tumblr [all are good] is that some of them change the terms and conditions essentially giving the website ownership of your pictures.

https://www.dropbox.com/ is ad free and has 2gb of free space, which can be increased at extra cost. You can have direct links to any file you like or whole albums. No size restrictions but there are bandwidth restrictions that are hard to exceed, but you can remove these by paying for the service.
