Whizz off Turbo

Alright guys
Dropped the oild and changed air, oil and fuel filters.
Air filter change well over due.
The Turbo seems to be making a hell of a lot more noise after the
service.
Is this normal? - When I say making noise, I mean there was no noticable
noise from it prior to the service.
Could the new air filter make such a difference?
Any thoughts?

Niall,
check the connection between the air filter can and the turbo for
leaks. It could be that it is now sucking air past the filter ...

I have never noticed a difference in Turbo noise after changing an air
filter. If you have changed the oil is the new oil getting to the
turbo bearing?

How is that checked?
Same oil - 10/40 - castrol

OK Lads
This turbo whizz is still there.
Checked all inlets, outlets, wires, bits and bobs last nite. Nothing out
of the ordinary.
All I did was change the filters and oil.
Does anyone know if a Louder than usual Turbo Whizz is an indication of
impending turbo trouble - ie bearing failure?
If it does go - can I drive on ok?
Otherwise the vehicle has never run better.
Cheers

Yes this can be the true case, I have lived it my self.
If your turbo is shot then try get one from All Americain Imports. It
is better but only cost 1 500 euro.

Not sure what/where the waste gate is.....

Strange that it manifested itself after a service though

Niall,
As it is next to impossible to diagnose the fault on the net and the
stakes may be high, I'd suggest taking the LC to a reliable workshop
to give it a once over. It will help you decide on the course of
action, though I still believe it may be a minor thing.
You can travel with a shot turbo, provided it had not caused damage to
pistons first. All you need to do is disconnect it at the inlet
manifold. It normally involves driving without air filter, which in
some instances is still better than not driving at all.

Booked it in first thing this morning for a once over this afternoon.
Was hoping to be armed with some info before I went in.
Hopefully it's nothing major.

Wise move Niall.
You don't want to be dealing with turbo failure/problems if you can avoid it. I(
failed to spot a buggered inner axle oil seal before leaving on our trip to N
Africa and it was an unnecessary delay in Spain, much as I love being in the
mountains of Andalucia. If you see/hear something, best to deal with it asap as
you won't have these resources in the middle of nowhere.
You might have better weather though...

Alright lads
Turbo Whizz sorted!
Pipe off the turbo just loose - couldn't see it even though I checked
several times (at night)
Lesson learned: Service the vehicle in the daylight in future
Thanks for the pointers and help
Vroom vroom!! :)

Niall,
Glad you found it! Diagnosing on the net has been taken to a whole
new level! Still, don't give up on a third party inspection for any
other possible problem lurking in the dark.

You bet. Fair dews to the list

It's the age old problem - finding a third party that knows what they're
looking at!

Niall,
There are more LC mechanics at the south coast of France than in the
whole of Britain. If you are taking a boat for Africa from France, I
can give you contact details for a good 4x4 outfit in Perpignan.

Might just do that if I go that route. Would be nice to get the once
over the bits I can't or don't have the time to do myself before hitting
Africa.
Cheers
