Moto Guzzi produced and raced a 500cc DOHC V8 back in the 50's which produced about 80bhp and wasn't much bigger than that but I guess they had a much bigger R&D budget. It had some reliability problems though and Guzzi ceased development when they withdrew from racing.
I have a BBC 12" vinyl "Sound Story" of the Isle of Man TT in '57 I think. Dickie Dale rode the Guzzi V8 and the sound it made was fantastic.
As you say, some reliability problems and it was a "Guzzi V7 as often as not .
