Nup, but am looking for radiator components because my radiator has sprung a
leak.
About four years ago I had a reconditioned radiator that replaced the
orginal one. It did last four years but now I'm looking at the potential
mjaor expense of a completely new one - anybody got any ideas?

The Milner radiator - is it original toyo or another japanese version?
I'm considering replacing all the radiator components - do you (or others
come to that) think it would be a good idea to replace each one?
I've never even looked at LC 80 radiator components on the floor of a
workshop let alone got deep in there, down and dirty! so have no idea what
I'm looking at, or what I should be looking out for!

I had a radiator from Milner, not sure I've had it installed for 12 months
yet so no proof of longevity yet but seems good quality and well made and
it has a metal top tank which I prefer to the OEM plastic.

Hi Renate,
Try these people, I've no experience of them I just did a trawl for Toyota
radiator, they want ?173 for one, I don't know if that is reasonable or not.

The price that Milner are quoting is very reasonable, but before I rush
headlong into a financial transaction for an entire unit, could I be just
seeing the results of a hose being corrupted/eroded/weathered? I've got
bits in the way of seeing the bottom of the radiator, but is hose
destruction/coming away a common thing? Is there a foolproof way of
visually checking the state of the hoses without taking out the entire
radiator maybe?
I don't have a means of keeping l'beast safe in a garage before doing any
work on it, so I'd have to put it on the side of the road - a bit dicey
bearing in mind I live on a major trunk road which is always busy even at
the dead of night, so am quite reluctant to start taking things out because
I might not be able to put it back properly again...

Milner have one for ?220 exc VAT plus available both the hoses, top and

I don't know where its leaking, as I can't see whereabouts its leaking from.
All I know is that initially, on start up (a clue here methinks) everything
is okay until the temperature starts rising, then the red stuff starts
coming out, trickles at first then a bit more of a spurt, but I can still
drive it, although I probably shouldn't be driving it at all, and the leak
stops when I turn the ignition off, or pretty soon after. I've probably lost
about 500 ml so far, maybe a bit more, so I still drive it from time to
time, but obviously not in minus temperatures! - methinks I'd be pushing my
luck here...
I'd expect to replace the hoses, I don't think the header tank needs
replacing, although having said that, is that the first bit of the radiator
you see when you look under the bonnet? (I haven't a clue...).
I'd be prepared to replace the unit if it needed it.
I can see the first bit I think, and it looks okay from the front, but I
can't see it from the back as it were, or from underneath. This is where I
think I need to take the entire unit out, but as I said I'm reluctant to do
this for obvious reasons (busy trunk road).
I'm doing a John Byrne here, as I really haven't a clue about radiators -
sorry.

It's not Toyota but I don't remember what the makers name was. Milner
would be able to tell you the manufacturer I'm sure.
When you say 'radiator components' do you mean the hoses, header tank etc
or just the radiator unit and it's brazed / glued together parts?
Where is it leaking?

AS I said in an earlier email, it starts trickling when the temperature
gauge begins to rise, in other words, when the engine is getting good and
hot as I often run it for a few moments, sometimes ticking over for about
five minutes before I drive it anywhere - it usually starts when I pull out
onto the main road and start accelerating - it doesn't really spurt, on
occasions it does, but it doesn't seem to spurt all the time. So I drive as
its trickling steadily. - however I have made the observation that it seems
to slow after going for a few minutes (I look back and see no liquid on the
road; the only indicator of whether its still leaking). Okay, the bash
plates collects it and then I turn a corner and it all runs off...but not
that much comes off it. The last time the tank emptied (about 4 years ago)
the radiator or engine, I can't remember which, whistled, well, it sounded
like a whistle - I thought my turbo had gone or the exhaust but it was the
radiator, so I knew there was something wrong - it still got me home; I just
kept refilling the tank with water and coolant as by this time I had no
coolant left. Quite frankly I was surprised that l'beast didn't die on me
there and then; that was the year I got it reconditioned ad that solved the
problem - I can't remember but I believe the garage replaced the hoses also,
and something else, but I can't remember what.
My driveway is all up and down and higgledly piggedly so I can't actually
get underneath to see under or around the bash plate. Soon after stopping,
if I let the engine run it still leaks but as soon as I turn off the
ignition it stops.
The radiator cap hasn't been checked yet - the garage refilled the radiator
with coolant at the last MOT - I didn't think to check how loose or tight
the cap is, and unlike to toyo garage I assumed they wouldn't overfill it -
well you don't do you? You think they'll do it as you do. I'll check that
after work tomorrow - it should be still light when I finish.
I'll also have a good gander at the hoses tomorrow too, and see exactly what
I can see. I hadn't driven l'beast for about four-five weeks at this stage,
when the coolant leaked. Since then I've driven it just once when I
returned from being abroad - I had a slow puncture that needed attention.
potential issue, but I need to add that, at the last fuel refil when I
stopped the engine something made a kind of grating noise; it was after this
point that I saw the coolant on the brand newly resurfaced garage
forecourt.... It hasn't made that sound since, but it was just as I turned
the engine off, perhaps I didn't leave the turbo to tick over for a few
moments like I normally do, well, I let it tick over but not for long enough
maybe.

Where are you seeing it trickling and spurting from? Does it start as soon
as the engine starts and stop imediately the engine stops or are there
delays?
Standing at the front of the car looking towards the back, you've got the
radiator across the front of the engine bay which you can see the top of,
and an expansion bottle to the left, just in front of the left hand
battery.
There is a hose from the top right of the radiator to the top of the
engine block and a hose from the bottom left of the radiator to the bottom
of the engine block. Those are the only hoses that go between the engine
and radiator. There a some hoses towards the rear of the engine block for
the cabin heater(s) but I'll leave describing those until we've narrowed
down where the leak is.
2 simple things it could be - an over filled expansion bottle, as the
water heats and expands it comes out of the radiator and into the
expansion bottle which if there isn't room for it overflows. Also a weak
radiator cap can cause too much coolant to go into the expansion bottle
with the same result.
Jon.
